West of Africa - Cape Verde

Featured Replies

Today we will visit 8 of the 10 islands of the Republic of Cabo Verde.

Cabo Verde, also known as Cape Verde, is a volcanic archipelago located off the west coast of Africa, about 500 kilometers (310 miles) from the mainland. The country consists of ten inhabited islands and five uninhabited islets. The archipelago was discovered by the Portuguese in the 15th century. It was a Portuguese Colony until 1975. The islands were formed by volcanic eruptions millions of years ago. Cabo Verde has a hot and dry climate with little rainfall, especially in the islands' interior. The coastal areas have fertile plains suitable for agriculture. Tourism is a major industry, attracting visitors to beautiful beaches and cultural attractions. Agriculture is limited due to the arid climate, but some crops like corn and beans are grown. Fishing is an important economic activity, focussing on tuna and other marine resources. Cabo Verde is working to diversify its economy and reduce its dependence on tourism.

We depart from Sao Filipe (GVSF) on the island of Fogo. The island is dominated by the active volcano Pico de Fogo, which is 9281 feet high and the highest mountain of Cabo Verde. We fly around the volcano, make a low pass over the airport of Ponta Do Sol, and head for Santiago Island. We explore the island and land at Praia‘s international airport Mandela (GVNP). Praia is the capital city of Cabo Verde and its political, economic, and cultural center. We reach the next island, Maio, and land at its only airport (GVMA). Due to a persistent drought, many inhabitants emigrated from the island. Heading north we arrive at Rabil (GVBA) on the island of Boa Vista. It is the easternmost island of Cabo Verde.

Further north we reach Sal (GVAC) on the island with the same name. This island is a tourist destination with white sandy beaches and 350 days of sunshine yearly. Now we turn west and land at Preguica (GVSN), on the island of São Nicolau. We head northwest again and make a low pass or touch-and-go at Ponta Do Sol (GVAN) on the island of Santo Antão, the northwesternmost island of Cabo Verde. We finish the flight at Sao Pedro (GVSV) on the island of Saõ Vicente.

The flight is 360 miles long and has 6 landings. I will be in the BS Analog King Air, please fly what you like.

The flight plans are here.
