Help understanding chart

Hello, need some help in understanding what this means:"Leave OCK on OCK VOR R290 maintaining MNM holding level. At OCK D8 descend to cross OCK D12 not below6000'. At OCK D12 turn right onto GWC VOR R001, descending to cross GWC D35 not below 3500'. At GWC D35turn right onto localiser I-AA (Rwy 09L) or I-BB (Rwy 09R), as instructed by ATC, descending to 3000', to beestablished by I-AA/I-BB D10. At I-AA/I-BB D10 descend to 2500', then continue the ILS/DME or LLZ/DMEinstrument approach procedure as detailed on the instrument approach charts."From: http://www.ais.org.uk/aes/pubs/aip/pdf/aer...es/32LL0707.PDFThis is relating to a chart which describes how to line up for ILS 9 approach into Heathrow. What is 'OCK D8'? I understand the first part, which is to leave the OCK VOR at 290 heading maintaining minimum holding altitude. How do I know I have arrived at OCK D8 and OCK D12?

I wrote a tutorial on this for British Airways Virtual Airbus pilots. So it's based on the Airbus but I hope it gives you some help even if you are flying a different type.***In this tutorial LSK means Line Select Key- there are 6 down each side of the MCDU and LSK1L is the top left LSK, LSK2L is the second one down, LSK3R is the 3rd down on the right and so on. In general the left LSKs are for lateral changes, the right LSKs for vertical changes. The flightplan is for a flight from EGJJ to EGLL. We will approach EGLL Heathrow on the OCK1E STAR http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/165537.jpgThe OCK1E STAR unsurprisingly takes us as far as OCK. Enter the hold here: - flight level 070, IAS 220kts - press the left LSK next to OCK and then LSK3L marked HOLD. Check the computed hold data. You will probably find it incorrect. Change the inbound course at LSK1L to 332 and press LSK6R INSERThttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/165538.jpg - exit the hold (you might however be planning all this on the ground which is fine). We'll now need to enter the data according to the instructions you posted: "Leave OCK on OCK VOR R290....at OCK D8....OCK D12" So two PBD (Place Bearing Distance) fixes to enter here at OCK D8 and OCK D12: - click the left LSK next to OCK to bring up the lateral revision page from that waypoint/fix and type OCK/290/8 then press LSK3R NEXT WPT. Then press the orange INSERT lsk at LSK6R - Scroll through your flightplan and you will see PBD01 entered. http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/165539.jpg - Clear the discon below PBD01 (clr key and then the left the left LSK next to F-PLN DISCONTINUITY) - Press the left LSK next to PBD01 and enter OCK/290/12 and confirm it the same way as above. You will now see PBD02 in your flightplan. Clear the Discon below it. "cross OCK 12 not below 6000'" - To enter this constraint press the right LSK next to PBD02. This brings up the vertical revision page. Enter +FL060 and press LSK3R marked ALT CSTR. Instead of +FL060 you could also enter just FL060 here and still comply with the constraint. http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/165540.jpg - Then press LSK6L RETURN. If you scroll through your flightplan you will now see at PBD02 that on the far left FL060 is shown with a magenta star showing a constraint has been set. "At OCK 12 turn right onto GWC VOR R001, descending to cross GWC D35 not below 3500" - We need another PBD fix here. Press the left LSK next to PBD02 and type GWC/001/35 and press LSK3R NEXT WPT. And confirm as before.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/165541.jpg By the way when scrolling through the flightplan I usually use PLAN mode on the EFIS to give clearer visual clues on the ND. - You now have PBD03 and possibly a Deceleration point before it in your flightplan. Click the right LSK next to PBD03 and enter an altitude constraint of +3500. Clear the F-PLN Discon below PBD03. You'll see on the ND that it has placed you nicely to turn right to capture the loc.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/165542.jpg - I now suggest you delete the CF09L centre fix because it has set the altitude at 1583 ft which doesn't comply with the instructions on the approach plate. (You can change the alt if you wish but I often actually delete it). So CLR then left LSK next to CF09L. You will notice this also deletes the Deceleration Point. - As you have deleted the centre fix and decel points you MUST make sure you activate the approach manually on the PERF page. - Now for the first constraint on the approach plate. You can't enter IAA/272/7.5 unfortunately but you can enter LON/272/8.2 (272 being the reverse radial from 092). So press the left LSK next to PBD03 and enter LON/272/8.2. When you enter it you will be presented with a list of duplicate names, their distance from you and whether they are NDBs or VORs. In this case the selection of the third one down is fairly obvious: press the left LSK to select it and LSK6R to INSERT. PBD04 will now be in your flight plan. Delete the discon below it.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/165543.jpg - Now press the right LSK next to PBD04 and enter an ALT CSTR of 2500. Below is an overview of how the approach looks on the ND.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/165544.jpg - Capture the Loc and glideslope in the normal manner. Managed speed at 4nm to decelerate to landing speed. Disengage a/p at your discretion after that. This might all seem rather laborious for you, but the skill here is to read the charts quickly and enter the data quickly into the MCDU.

Thanks! This was exactly the kind of information I was looking for. I don't fly airbus too much -- but I might just fire up the 330 just to practice punching in the information.I guess my real question you answered early on; (the answer to which was PBD) as I was not sure of how to translate the information from the chart to the FMC.Thanks again, and I really appreciate all your good work. Hopefully, when I get a few more hours under me (stopped flying online for 3 years due to move) I will sign up with BAV; you certainly go above and beyond in the training department :)Edit:Ran into a problem while trying to program ASTRA1F arrival into EGKK, then trying to program the approach procedures into 26L. I got all the way to the waypoint after MAY, but then it states"At MAY D8
