Yesterday 2024 was magic...Today it is a bad dream

Featured Replies

Everything in 2024 yesterday seemed to be coming together nicely.  Good scenery, I could load a few of my favorite addons, FPS was in mid-40s with high and ultra settings, controls were working well.

Today - 2024 made me think about asking for my Steam money to be returned

- All my control setting for the Airbus T320 stick vanished, AGAIN.  I carefully created and saved them yesterday with a custom name.  I restarted the sim yesterday and found my custom settings.  Today - those custom settings are gone.

- Frame Gen is no longer even visible as an option (works perfectly in 2020 DLSS 3.8.10) and I can find nothing to make it return in 2024 (I did verify the correct .dll is in the 2024 with the flight sim executable)

- I used the ASOBO TBM 930 EFB flight planner and created a nice flight KTIW to KMYF @ 25,000' going VOR to VOR.  The flight planner works nicely but the FMS shows a route with the SID and the 28R Approach but none of the 8 intermediate way points.

- I created the same route in the 2024 flight planner available on the web and saved it.  I again restarted the 2024 sim and loaded the TBM which came up with the same route minus all the intermediate way points.  I open the EFB flight planner and load the route from it's stored location.  Again, only the SID and approach appear in the TBM FMS but all appear in the EFB flight planner.

OH Well - I manually add the waypoints to the TBM FMS flight plan.

I then take off in the TBM with the AP set for heading and FLC @135kts to 10,000'.  I hand steer to 3,000' and am exactly on heading and activate the AP.  After two 360 degree turns and multiple oscillations in altitude from 1500' to 4500' I accept that the AP will not fly a heading.  I hand fly to 10,000' and get on a heading for the first waypoint (OLM VOR).  The LOC1 arrow is dead on the heading and I have the plane trimmed for 10,000 at 190 knots.  I turn on the AP and do two more circles and see 8,000' and 11,000'.  SO - no AP working.

All the time I am dealing with the autopilot the frame rate is going from 2 FPS to 5 FPS.  Yesterday at the same altitude and location I was seeing 45 FPS.  So - even with no Frame Gen I would expect to see 22 - 25 FPS.

My hardware monitors show one (1) of my eight 5GHz processors is at about 13%, a couple are at 3%, and the rest at 0%.  The sim's network activity is consistently less than 9kbs and sometimes 0 bps for several seconds, while OOKLA shows I have an 850Mbs connection.  The GPU is loafing along at less than 50%.

But, the odd part is the CPU frame time is about 24ms which, should give a frame rate of about 40FPS.

So - why is the CPU at almost idle while the network activity is almost nil?

When 2024 was running yesterday flying over the San Diego mountains at 9,000' in a 172 at high and ultra settings with terrain and object levels of 200 I was getting 40+ FPS while the network activity for the sim was varying between 400 and 600 Kbs with peaks to 1.5Mbs

Other annoying features that appeared today:

- cannot spin the HDG or CRS AP knobs by swiping down like in 2020.  I never see the little half arrow when I drag the mouse pointer across the knob.

- Using a hat switch on the stick to look up, down, left, right has variable results.  Sometimes it moves the view a little, sometime it moves the view 90 degrees.

- At times the D-> button activation refuses to work.  I then close the D-> and redo and Activate works perfectly

I do enjoy a challenge but I would like to have fun once in a while.

I've gone back to 2020. The mess of the user interface, the washed out colors of the sim, the bad night lighting, the glowing flight displays. Who even signed off on all this? In the tech alpha, some things actually looked nice, what the hell happened??

I'm actually starting to see that this might indeed be moving more towards the gamers.... 2020 it is.

It's stuck at 0% for me in the last 3 hours. I was exploring some areas 6 hours ago, loading fast, everything was working smoothly, and now it can't even pass 0% on loading. I guess server issues again.

I just accepted that I need to be a bit more patient in the first couple of weeks, that's all. No big deal, I have other sim(s) installed.

Current system: ASUS PRIME Z690-P D4, Intel 12900k, 32GB RAM @ 3600mhz, Zotac RTX 3090 Trinity, M2 SSD, Oculus Quest 2.

I don't pray for a user manual. Just a Controls Options manual.

I had to back up every profile. Ignore the bottom of the 3  boxes and the top Universal box, and just use the Airplane box in the middle for profiles. And back up everything each step. Eventually all my controllers got assigned like I wanted. I can't say how it was just trial and error and change planes all the while to see if the settings carried over to the other planes.

There are advanced options like repeat when pressed or non repeat.

There are YT videos about this, none of which helped me. It was just trial and error. A simple 4 or 5 page manual would show us how it's all supposed to be done.

Have a look in the Controls Settings..  I had a similar thing happening and found that the hat switch had multiple conflicting assignments..

I can’t even get into the controls setting to configure TOBII because it CTD’s every time.

I paid $200 for this BS and I was happy to do it because not in a million years did I expect they would mess this release up after several shambolic releases of 2020 (initial + several SU’s)

Hi,

It's like a mantra.

MS2024 isn't keeping some of my settings (mostly in the keyboard), so I have to reconfigure again in each flight.

I'm 75 years old, I have flying in simulation since 1987! I think I can deserve some respect!

Greetings

Well time is money and all that. I don’t have the time to invest in MSFS2024 and understand all its nuances only for it to change at some point in the future. They need to get their @&£& together and in the meantime MSFS2020 is a perfectly suitable alternative.

I've been slowly trying to like FS 2024 but I concur with all of the above posts that blame the new Controller UI 😞  It's so strangely defined that even when I think I've found the "logic", I end up finding it's not that 😕

I am trying to find good tutorials for guys like me with years of flight simulation in different platforms (I'd count at least 30 yrs of full spare time dedication to flight simulation, shared with some time flying gliders IRL...) and yes, my brain is not the same, but heck! this should be easier (???)

If you do it right, then it will keep all your settings. I did it right by trial and error but took over 2 hours. And I don't know what I did right that last time that it now works every flight. So I don't want to change anything, I might not get it back to where it is now. A simple manual is what I need.

Indeed, an the irony of all of this is that a few months ago when i raised an issue with 2020 and the landscape of the UK becoming burnt to a crisp in bing maps, the same people now saying how much better 2024 is and how great it is compared to 2020, where the same people shouting me down for daring to question 2020....

Choosing to stick to 2020 is a perfectly acceptable thing to do, for example i just checked, i purchased 2020 on September 2021, it released August 2020. That's how i do things and it works out as i clearly last time missed out all the problems at launch as well.....

If no one pre purchased, its of my opinion, that this culture of devs releasing half finished games would largely end...

They made a big blunder with that system. Apparently there's mouse acceleration baked into the cockpit view, for whatever reason. So the mouse and some hat switches might accelerate the faster you move / longer you hold. Also the 'freelook cockpit speed' slider in options controls both the mouse and the hat switch. My mouse is very fast, so I turned that down, which resulted in the hat switch view being ungodly slow. So I had to turn that back up which means my mouse look not only flies around, neigh on uncontrollable, it also does these massive "flicks" due to the baked in acceleration. So sometimes I'll suddenly do a 180* by moving my mouse a few inches fast.

Often I get this bug, all controls and visuals freeze suddenly. You lose somehow connection with the sim. Restart is only cure. Bad stuff.

Oooh no, can’t agree with this at all. The colours are a triumph.

Edit: especially if you’re using HDR, they’re insanely realistic.
