Just one setup menu line would solve the problem.

Disable career mode

and after that you could fly any mission you want. You would not earn enything but I could live with it.

Exactly. It would be free flight, but using the new mission features.

I know Sérgio since quite a few years, and visit his Helisimmer site anytime I need feedback on a rotary wing product for any of the platforms he covers.

During more than a decade Sérgio has been a reference in rotary wing simulation, and since FS 2020 also a very enthusiastic user and supporter of the platform, so I read his comments with attention and agree with him in most of what he has to say, even though I am watching FS 2024 with pink shades and somehow fell "in Love" with remarkable flight simulation platform already 🙂

My initial impressions on MSFS2024 – I am not pleased • HeliSimmer.com

Solely, one persons opinion only! If it's on YouTube consider it a paid review.

He just chose a platform to put his thoughts out to the masses.

I'm not watching FS2024, it works acceptable on my system to not have to bash it to death.

It's far from perfect but neither was FS2020. Putting both in the console realm has changed my definition of birth long ago! They are both games more than a sim.

For those having issues there is no doubt many will be remedied quickly.

Embrace the future!

If it was a paid review, I would have said so. I don't do paid reviews, though, although I do get products to review, for free.

And many, many other game/sims (flying like DCS, racing, trains, truck driving, heck even farming) have this exact feature. "Missions" or "skirmish mode" or whatever in addition to career.

It is not at all a novel concept, and something pretty much expected in the genre.

By the way Sergio, I also mostly fly helis in FS2020 these days (almost exclusively, in fact, not because I dislike fixed-wing but because I love helicopters and it is a great way to engage with the world in the sim), enjoy it a ton (the HPG mission stuff is great) and was looking forward to seeing these mission features natively implemented in FS2024. It is disappointing this is the route they have gone. I agree with pretty much your entire article.

Fully agree with Sergio. I was looking forward trying the missions. Specially the helicopter and waterbomber ones. But I was utterly disappointed to learn that the "cool" missions are blocked behind several sim-hours and multiple examinations, making it a chore rather than something fun.

To be clear, I am not against having a career mode, but about making it mandatory in order to fly any missions.

Even worse, for some missions or aircraft you also need to get some credits by "farming" them in missions you may not like at all to do.

Here in the official forum it is discussed (apparently with some proof, but I cant confirm) that the goal is to sell "credits" in the marketplace. 100 simcoins will cost 28 euros.

https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/the-career-mode-is-server-side-for-one-reason-only/671348

If that is confirmed, the decission to make missions exclusive for the careers mode, not being able to use 3rd party addons, the need to accumulate flight hours... becomes no more a bad design but a greedy approach to make the sim a pay per play platform!

If this is confirmed I will be very disappointed with Microsobo. Not just for the bad direction they want to take with the sim, but by being shaddy and unclear with all this story

I am incredibly doubtful about this.  Having some kind of middle-man abstraction currency between real cash and the actual in-sim marketplace? Very unnecessary, but (sadly) pretty standard in the gaming space. Straight up selling credits? No. They don't even do that in their "game" games for the most part, let alone a sim with an older-skewing userbase where they know full well the reaction would be a thousand times worse than some teenagers playing Forza Horizon or something.

Appreciate your unique perspective Sergio, given your focus on helicopters. They really do need to separate out the 'career' path for helicopter simmers - forcing people to use fixed wing aircraft for any amount of time to be able to engage with a new core feature is dumb.

I've been impressed with the flight dynamics in the sim, but they've clearly got some early technical teething issues to work out elsewhere, which is disappointing.

So, that’s fine, it’s his opinion.

I don’t fly airliners, anymore much, and will stop in the career path for those once I get to where I want to be.

Why, I ask myself, all the deference to someone, just because they have a platform.

It’s one person’s opinion, not more or less valid than anyone else on this forum, so why all the tiptoeing and kowtowing around this guy.

I like the career mode and I think it’s fine as is…

(now come after me with the pitch forks  in defense of this guy, but in the end, both what he says and I say are only opinions when it comes to this topic!)

@jcomm just shared my article for others to read, enjoy (or not) and discuss if they thought worth if discussion.

You're the one making it a lot more than it actually is with all that talk about deference and how it's just an opinion. Yeah. It's exactly that. We all have our opinions.

You're taking it too serious. Not even I take myself seriously.

I read much the same from you in the Official Forum, where you went on and on about it.

If it’s not that big a deal and you don’t take it seriously why not drop it, or let people differ in the opinion from yours and leave it at that?

Good grief - no one is "deferring" to Sergio, he puts in a lot of time and effort to provide news and information useful to a lot of people. If you don't like what he is writing, you are free to ignore it.

The fact that I posted here the link to Sergio's article is simple - so I thought - to understand:

- given the many posts regarding Career Mode I've read here at AVSIM, comments I've heard from players in Youtube, and also from my even if not frequent visits to the Official MSFS Forums, I thought it would be interesting to share the opinion of someone who has been so close to the MSFS development and dedicates a good part of his life to flight simulation, bringing since years everything that he thinks is worth sharing about rotary wing in different flight simulation platforms to the simmers community.

Just that!

I personally can't comment on the career mode because I haven't even used it, and after all expectations I had placed on it I will probably end up not using it at all, and, after a week with FS 2024 I now say I would actually prefer to see some problems that concern me a lot more, addressed by ASOBO, like the (I continue to say although that's not the opinion of the great majority...) poor flight dynamics in most aircraft I have tried, from gliders to airliners, the poor weather effects that IMHO and after testing it with storm scenarios and being able to cross a thunderstorm without having to touch the stick or in an airliner observe any consequences of such an unrealistic ( IRL ) decision, still plague FS 2024 maybe even worst than in FS 2020 although they said they'd been updated, or,  as yet another example, the way thermals / convection is modelled, bringing soaring flight to a still very much detached from reality state of affairs, and so on and so forth...

In those areas I complain about MSFS being more of an Arcade than a serious FLIGHT simulator, Sérgio disagrees. He has a much more positive view / interpretation of how the sim performs and delivers as a whole experience of flight, allowing users within a vast spectrum of interests and focus on details to enjoy the MSFS Ecosystem...

And Yet! I love FS 2024 and it's now the sim I start more often, even if at the end of each session I feel a bit... strange 🙂
