Well, after finally having a few days of being able to test the waters with msfs 2024, this evening it is back to constant ctds which usually occur about 2 seconds after the Start button appears on the screen. I got into the game once this evening, but again ctd while trying to select a plane.

This sim has some nice new features, but wow, what a big letdown compared to the initial buildup and marketing.

One of my favourite improvements is that the runway lights are not on in the daytime. Flight dynamics feel a bit better, especially the feeling of touchdown and rollout. Sounds are better on the few planes I have tried. The color of inland water is more accurate. Lighting seems better overall. Trees are more accurately placed in non-photogrammetry areas, but far worse in photogrammetry areas (giant trees growing out of highrises, bridges etc., a regression to the early days of 2020). Ground details are obviously better, but how much time are you close enough to see those details it in a flight simulator. The tablet and flightplanner are a nice feature, but need refinement.

ATC is worse even though MS said there were some improvements. AI traffic is still pretty haywire - will need fsltl for that.

Performance (when I can actually get into a flight) seems comparable to 2020, perhaps even smoother in 2D on my system, but I always fly in VR and for me, performance in VR is much worse than it was in 2020 using even more conservative settings. If that doesn't improve in time I will definitely have to stay with 2020 until I can afford a more powerful GPU.

Hopefully, I can get past the ctds again soon so I can a least explore what 2024 does have to offer.

Did you empty your Community folder and did you stop using any add-ons?

Add-ons, including GSX, etc, can cause problems and CTDs for MSFS 2024 now.

I haven't installed any addons yet. Just a vanilla install.

I have to reduce settings in VR on my Crystal Light too.

In VR, TAA is no go, unusable. But I always used DLSS in both 2D and VR anyway.

In 2020 VR I could use DLSS balanced and render at high end.

In 2024 VR I now use  DLSS performance (down 1 notch) and Render at Medium (down 1 notch).

In 2D I use DLSS quality and Render ultra in both 2020 and 2024. So I don't have to reduce in 2D for 2024.

VRFlightSimGuy says Quest 3 gives better performance than Crystal Light in VR in 2024. But not in 2020, where it's the other way around and PCL > Q3.

5800X3D, RTX4070, 600 Watt, one or two 1440p 32" screens, 64 GB RAM, 4 TB  PCle 3 NVMe, Warthog throttle, VKB NXT EVO stick, Honeycomb Alpha yoke, CH quad, 3 Logitech panels, 2 StreamDecks, Desktop Aviator Trim Panel. Crystal Light VR.

I am still running a Reverb G2 as I have kept Windows 11 at 23H2. I do use DLSS performance in 2020 but with a custom render scale of 125% in Open XR Tools and Motion Reprojection. I get a smooth experience with motion reprojection locked to 30fps with some fsltl traffic in nearly any situation.

Like you, in 2024 I have to lower my settings for VR. I keep DLSS at performance but lower the render scale to 100%. This gets me by in "light areas", but in heavier areas like KLAX, it is an unusable stutterfest, even with no AI traffic and VR settings set to low end.

In 2D with highend settings and lots of AI traffic I can maintain a very smooth 45 to 50  FPS over LAX which is about the same as or slightly better than I get in 2020. There is clearly something amiss with VR optimiztion in 2024. Hopefully they get it sorted eventually (After they solve all of the server issues which I am sure are the cause of my CTDs.)

I have some, but they can't be the cause. I was able to launch the sim and start a flight several times later tonight with no issue, probably after the server load died down. The entire system is just not robust enough for a consistent experience.

Yes, VR isn't optimized for 2024, especially while landing at airports down low.

How do you get around this when they have automatically added them via streaming with no way to turn them off?

That post explains how creating empty folders prevents the sim streaming the content. There is another post on here somewhere from inibuilds explaining how to control streaming content by renaming folders.

I think 2020 marketplace content streaming automatically to 2024 might be causing some of the problems people are experiencing,  and there is currently no way of managing content unless you poke around in the operating system.

None of this is optimized. Which is disturbing because of the number of times we were told it would be optimized.  And the CPU/GPU ultilization is frankly a Joke also.

with the latest hardware I have no complaints in VR. you have still a lot of room to upgrade.

AMD 7800X3D, Windows 11, Gigabyte X670 AORUS Elite AX Motherboard, 64GB DDR5 G.SKILL Trident Z5 NEO RGB (AMD Expo), RTX 4090,  Samsung 980 PRO M.2 NVMe SSD 2 TB PCIe 4.0, Samsung 980 PRO M.2 NVMe SSD 1 TB PCIe 4.0, 4K resolution 50" TV @60Hz, VR: Pimax Crystal Light + HP Reverb G2 @ 90 Hz, Honeycomb Bravo Throttle Quadrant, be quiet 1000W PSU, Noctua NH-U12S chromax.black air cooler.

60-130 fps. no CPU overclocking.

very nice.

To be fair, it may not truly be code optimized but the game is now definitely using all cores fully and my GPU fully also.

i am getting 100% CTD's around 5 mins after departure onwards.

I have only been able to complete one flight in free flight (career not really tested but seems uneffected.).

I've deleted the caches, recommended by some youtubers, no luck

If anyone has any advice, I would be super greatful.

The crashes always start with the sound bugging out (external sound device) and then hang, then crash.
