Long time MSFS 2020 user, have used FSX and FSW in the past, got x plane 11 in steam sale for 8 quid. Just want to know of anything i should be aware of on first getting into it, is it easy to set up and can i be flying pretty quickly using a controller?

Yes compared to MSFS it’s very easy to configure your controlls and start a first flight. I wouldn’t have chosen XP11 but XP12 who is way more advanced and is still being developped and improved.

Yeah xp12 is 44 quid, xp11 8 quid, cheap enough to risk it, i doubt i'll play it much over MSFS 2020 but i always wanted to try some form of xplane...

Xp12 has a lot more to offer than 11. 11 was a transition to allow laminar to do new things, but that means 12 demands some better hardware. 12 also has far improved atc,

I got xp11 and xp12 , if its only to try xp and not use it very often its much more worth getting xp11 over xp12 for the price you paid.

If you where to use it a lot id recommend xp12

Yep my thinking exactly

What controller are you using? Most, if not all, joysticks will work out of the box. Gamepad triggers can't be used as rudder inputs out of the box, as they're recognized as two separate axis.

Other than that, XP11 is a good entry. If you really like it, make use of the sale on XP12, as it's better in all aspects.

Thats womans logic. The shoes where on special so i bough them saved myself some money. Actually you didnt, you just spent money you on something you didnt need, Now if he wants XP12 hes going to have to pay again, I dont understand the logic. To add to that, xp11 isnt going to come anywhere near representing what xp12 has to offer.

You can download the demo from x-plane.com. It has all the features of the release version, but scenery is limited to Portland area. Flying is limited to 15 minutes per session, after which flight controls stop working.

Have never flown with a controller, so can't help there.

Main advice is that the Default aircraft are all decent.

So, don't be in a hurry to buy payware unless you're VERY sure you want a particular addon.

That said, the best discounts of the year are right now. Particularly for v11 add-ons.

ALSO, if you do buy an addon, ensure it specifically says it's compatible with v11. There are a good handful out there that are v12 only.

Curiosity: why would you want to fly with Xp11 (or 12) if you already own FS2020? 

XP11 cannot compete graphically against FS2020.
The latter is far superior in everything... lighting, scenery, clouds, sky, sea, reflections, modeling, antialiasing... there is no match... FS2020 wins hands down on the default graphics compared to XP11 (and even 12).

XP11-12 - even if they are compatible with gamepad controllers - are not products designed to fly with gamepad controllers (playstation style to be clear).
To appreciate the flight dynamics of this simulator it is preferable to use good flight peripherals (wheel and pedals).
Gamepad controllers are good for the more arcade products equipped with more "simplistic" flight dynamics.
Frankly the thought of using Xplane with a gamepad leaves me perplexed.
If I had FS2020 in my computer, and a gamepad, I would fly exclusively with FS2020, so at least I can enjoy the extraordinary graphics without paying too much attention to the fake piloting accuracy of the gamepad.

XP12 can absolutely if you put in the effort (but that's the key word, effort!!). It all depends on what people are after, if it's exploring scenery and eye-candy, FS2020/2024 wins and I enjoy exploring in MFS2020 (2024 not so much so far, but it'll improve I hope), but in terms of the interface, ease of use, configurability and the feeling of flight, XP12 wins for me so far. All subjective of course, just use both, they're both awesome sims

Sure, if the user puts in the effort he can completely overturn the graphics of XP11 or 12, at the cost of a lot of patience and a lot of money (where do you store petabytes of photoreal scenarios on your PC?).
Seriously, do you think a user who already has FS2020 (which we all know comes out on the box with jaw-dropping graphic quality) would today start accessorizing XP11 to make it graphically similar to FS2020, and then fly it in "arcade style" with a gamepad controller?
I wonder what all this effort is for and what the benefit would be compared to flying directly with FS2020 and gamepad.

I have watched a lot of fs2020 and a few 2024 videos, I would not consider it Jaw dropping unless i was comparing it to an ancient ver of flightsim. Once upon a time all people wanted to do was fly, now all they want to do is look out the window, I still cannot comprehend the reasoning behind this scenery thing, dumping huge amounts of data on you machine some that you may never ever fly over and mostly barely notice, But I see it is a big deal for some, I just couldnt be bothered with it all.
