Has Microsoft kneecapped MSFS 2020 to make 2024 look better?

Featured Replies

Since the launch of 2024 and the servetr debacle, 2020 now hangs for nearly a minute on the checking for updates screen adding almost a minute to the total load time.  I have read that some of the 2020 server capacity was moved over to support 2024 so maybe that is the reason.

Other than that, 2020 seems to be running fine at the moment, though there were some crashes during the server issues.

Make sure your Windows clock settings under SETTINGS / Time & Language / Date & Time, have enabled:

  • Set the time authomatically
  • Adjust for daylight saving time automatically

Hit the "Sync now" button

Restart FS 2020 or FS 2024 and see how it goes...

No problems on my MSFS2020 startups.

Same as always.

2 minutes and 45 seconds to the selection screen.

Another 30 seconds to the runway.

Edit:

I did not purchase MSFS2024.

It's faster, actually I'd say as fast as in FS 2020, to start FS 2024 now ( I don't very well recall in FS 2020 because it's been quite a while since I quit using it... ), after I applied the above Settings under "Time & Language" in my Win 11.

No, and please don't come on here to speculate and conspiring something that has baseless proofs.

My MSFS2020 is still taking the same time needed to load prior to MSFS2024, your community folder has an impact to your loading time.

In contrast, my MSFS2024 is loading pretty quickly compared to MSFS2022, but then again, my community folder is pretty much empty at the moment...

Whats with the tinfoil nonsense?  This was an honest question based on my experience.  Nothing else.   God this forum can be so depressing.

People are reacting this way because your post title is clickbaity and it insinuates that if others are, indeed, seeing increased loading times, it's not just because Microsoft are having trouble with their servers but because they artificially want to make MSFS 2020 look bad.

People will generally assume that posts like these are less about asking an "honest question" and more about "stirring the pot" and generating controversy.

I expect that if you'd simply asked neutrally whether others are also seeing increased loading times in MSFS 2020, you would have gotten a different reaction.

I've done at least half a dozen full APL2 flights in 2020 in the last couple days and it's never run or looked better. I was missing my Detailed airports. Now I'm in FS2024 cruising at 37000ft in another APL2 flight thinking....

I can't wait till they bring my airports back.

Respectfully, my experience is great in both sims.

I loaded 2020 again this morning after being underwhelmed by the many 2024 issues.  Simply tired of the loading time and the control setups in 2024.  Lo and behold, MSFS 2020 is now taking as long to load as 2024.  Almost twice as long as pre-2024 on my system.  Tried several times with a rebooted system to hide any residual software in memory.

Am I along or is Microsoft trying to cover up their poor execution of MSFS 2024?

Hi,

I believe they are working on the servers, reducing 2020 output since many have moved over to MS2024, and at the same time increased 2024 output due to server demand. I don't think it is/was done on purpose to downgrade 2020 users in an attempt to move them to 2024, it was done to save cash being spent on server availability/usage.

Former Beta Tester - (for a few companies) - As well as provide Regional Voice Set Recordings

They have clearly shifted server resources over from 2020 to 2024. That's the only thing that can explain all those loading issue with 2020 that came out of nowhere last week or so. There can be no debate about that.

However I don't think they've done it to make 2024 look *better*, but to make 2024 *work* at all. Clearly MS has no interest in paying for more server capacity, so the only alternativ is reshifting the capacity they have between 2020 and 2024.

For transparency: I'm a community mentor at the BATC discord. However, I do not get paid for it in any way.

The flip side of this to consider is that while they may have shifted resources, it's entirely likely that the demand for v2020 resources has PLUMMETED since v2024's launch.

For e.g., 100% of my MSFS usage has been v2024 since launch. I'm not sure what percentage have done that, but obviously it's going to be an increasing number day over day.

Many more people are taking a measured approach and continue to use BOTH sims, but obviously not simultaneously. Again, the inverse is true: most people are going to decrease their utilization of v2020 as their preferred addons are made compatible, or their particular blocking issues are fixed.

About the server capacity for 2020 being reduced and some of it being "moved over" to help with 2024. Did MS/Asobo actually state that somewhere? Or is that more wild speculation?

Here MSFS 2020 keeps loading as it always has....I can only wish it loaded as rapidly as 2024 does. I was one of the seemingly lucky ones to have 2024 up and running immediately on Day 2 with no loading or server issues witnessed.

Wild speculation at this point, no one has confirmed anything.

I have said all along it would be quicker to spin up new instances for 24 than have to start wiping 2020 from resources then reloading with 24 resources for what appeared to be a single point of failure at launch.
