MSFS 2024 is improving but still so very annoying

I think by now we should realize that there's no chance of converting people who don't like 2024. We're always going to be in a trench war, perpetually trying to sway other opinions. To be honest - I'm not sure how much I like the new sim. There's a lot of strange bugs here and there.

  • You do realize that MSFS2024 is THE NEXT version of MSFS2020, right? All that hard work and free bug testing in MSFS2020 was supposed to mean something. Or not.

MSFS2020 was a one-off; a lot of people let the early issues slide because we hadn't seen a new sim since FSX. There’s absolutely zero excuse for MSFS2024. What they’ve released is worse than an alpha

I'm bullish on 2024, but I'm with you. If you are having issues with your computer and 24 there is no hope for the rest of us. The Christmas patch seemed to make things worse for me.

No, I would never admit the CTDs drive me nuts at times.  Neither would I admit the sound breaking up and disappearing sometimes drives me crazy.  My defence of MSFS generally is in regard to those 'its rubbish' posts we often see.  Clearly it isn't rubbish and I will say so, in the hope those considering 2024 don't get a skewed idea of the product.

I don't want to occupy a space where there is only negativity and a lopsided balance of views.

Tbf, I think everyone in here, myself included, would very much like to be fully invested in MS2024 and divested of MS2020. When people say it’s “rubbish” you must remember that each persons view is subjective and highly biased in their view of what determines their tolerance on what is good vs. rubbish. While many view it as rubbish as you put it, most that have that view are hoping the day will come when they can use it.

A quick summary of this morning's experience. I pick a short IFR hop from KORD to KLSE in the Corvalis, load a flight plan, prepare to start my walk around, but the keyboard stops responding, so I unplug and plug back in and the sim CTDs. Oh well, spend 5 mins reloading and I'm back and can do the walk around and startup as per the checklist in the EFB that I now have. I can also set the time one hour earlier in 2024 and still get the correct weather / air traffic for that time of day and still have a bit of daylight.

ATC clears me to my runway, which I now have immediate access to the chart for so I don't need to faff around with searching for one online or using the taxi ribbon like some amateur! No, in 2024, I'm a real pilot with their own charts! But on the way to my runway there's a car ramp running over the taxi way. Don't think that should be there, but luckily it has no collision boxes so I can just pretend it doesn't exist and continue my taxi.

Takeoff has a few stutters, but even on my not-so-new rig I'm able to hold above 20fps with a TLOD of 275 and dynamic fps off, giving me a pretty smooth takeoff from the world's busiest airport. Not something I would have been able to do in 2020...

The rest of the flight goes pretty flawlessly. Yes, the ATC has me flying right on top of the clouds so I ask for more separation (don't want to use up all my deicing fluid in cruise!) but other than that, it's about an hour of the most realistic skies I've ever seen in any sim / game ever, the best clouds with several types of cirrus above the main layer through the flight, with the most incredible colours, and ATC actually following my requested flight plan. When I get to KLSE, my landing and flare are much better than I used to get in 2020 as I'm better at judging the weight now (now that they actually have some weight), and the windscreen and wings have picked up some dirt flying through those clouds and bugs.

So yes, irritations, but my 90 mins of simming this morning was about 10 mins of 'Grrrrr' and 80 mins of 'Oh, that's cool' to 'OMG, that's amazing'.

No-one's paid me to spend time typing all of this. It's not going to or meant to change anyone's mind. Just a report.

Next time this happens, try going into the control settings and select the keyboard without making any changes to the profile and then save/exit the settings. This has fixed my control issues 95% of the time that they happen. 2020 was also pretty bad with handling disconnecting controllers, so much that I ended up replacing my bluetooth keyboard shortly after 2020 was released since it would CTD the sim whenever it went into power saving mode. The 2024 alpha actually did the same thing with my Logitech wireless keyboard but luckily they fixed that issue before release.

That is pretty much me in a nutshell. I am patiently waiting this out.  I fly mostly Hjet at FL320 and above and into regional airports where freeware and payware 2020 addon airports are still better than most of the corresponding 2024 airports that though much improved are still too generic to match the custom build addons.

Other aircraft models I frequently fly are all 2020 addons or addon enhancements that have not yet been fully brought into 2024.  Though three of them are acceptable in 2024, they are each still lacking something, each in their own way.  It is only in the last 10 days that TDS has brought forward their Garmin GTN gauges, but aircraft model developers have not yet caught up with that.

Then 2024 continues to throw occasional and unexpected curveballs at me, usually just when I am finishing my preflight.  In some cases 2024 hangs on me after aircraft and parking spot selection. When that occurs 2024 stalls when it should zoom in to the airport. That is happening about 20% of the time.  And it is not the same aircraft, livery, or at the same airport.  Two days later the same combination starts the flight normally.  Go figure.

Another frustration is that 2024 keeps losing my custom cockpit cameras.  It is not the controls settings, such as switches on my Honeycomb Alpha.  When I double check those controls settings they are all still in place.   What is getting lost are the F1, F2, F3, etc. key combinations for custom camera views.  Yesterday I was so angry at having to set them once again that I quit 2024 and flew 2020 for the flight.  Then because I had little spare time sandwiched around my flight today, I just ignored 2024 and flew again with 2020.

Since the 2024 release I have logged 35.4 hours in 2024, and just 15.6 hours in 2020.  So I am not a naysayer. But I am certainly frustrated.

Cpt_Piett, with all due respect, and much is certainly due, I did not dig the trench.

OMG. The rhetoric has now turned trees into trucks....  😅  It happens!

I’ve made six bug reports over on the official forums, one of which is one of the highest voted on of all. How many have you done, champ?

Screenshots might look a bit wonky, because of HDR!

Strange enough. I have Cockpit/External View Mode on Joystick Button 1 and on Backspace. When I'm in the cockpit it changes the view to external. When I am walking, nothing happens.

There is an option in the settings whether 3rd person view is allowed or not, this might be the issue?

Thank you! It's hidden under Advanced/Experimental! 🙂 And thanks to @Cpt_Piett too.

Now I'll try not to disturb this super strange debate any further.
