Enhanced Turbulence Effects for MSFS (Active Sky/Real Turb)

Featured Replies

Hi,

at the moment I started to invest more time and money into MSFS2020. In the future I definitely want to upgrade to 2024 but at the moment I still wait till they fixed most of the issues and my favorite third party aircraft’s become compatible.

During my last flights I noticed that there weren’t any (or just a few) turbulence effects. The weather was pretty bad and I missed some moving of the airframe due to hefty winds. My turbulence Settings are set to realistic.

The last few days I read a lot about real Turb and active sky and I am still undecided. In regards to that I want to switch to MSFS2024 would you recommend both or just one of them (and if so which one)?

I don’t know exactly how the weather improved in MSFS2024 so any advice is appreciated. I am using FSrealistic as well as BATC or maybe Sayintensions in the future.

Right now I think that Real Turb would be the right thing but maybe active sky offers more effects which Real Turb doesn’t offer?

Thank you very much

The Author of ActiveSky says RealTurb is likely to be better with turbulence because it is a product focussed purely on turbulence.  However, Activesky itself produces great skies and effects.  Personally I use RealTurb on all flights, regardless if I am using default weather or Activesky.

If you like turbulence, go for FS2024 which has improved in this area, as it has with clouds in general.

External Storage Three 4Tb HDs

I use both simultaneously and it works very well.

To further clarify, RealTurb has focused specifically on turbulence while we do turbulence and lots of other things. Turbulence is something we've been working on and improving quite a bit lately (for both 2020 and 2024). We appreciate that RealTurb has worked to extend and also integrate with AS through the years, and this continues with MSFS.

Same here, using both and they work really good combined also with FS Realistic. I don't know if it was my impression, but during passing though the clouds i saw individual part of the cockpit shaking beside the camera movement etc.

I use BOTH, each for his own...

ASFS does the typical AS Magic 🙂  RealTurb brings really interesting effects, namely at airports where, under some weather scenarios, tricky operation come to play like LPMA and rw05 on windy days ...

Use both if you can!

Default weather effects in MSFS 2020 and 2024 leave a LOT to be desired...

Unfortunately none of these addons can do anything about details like proper modeling of thermals, whcich is a pitty because, due to it's incredibly realist scenery MSFS would be great to train soaring...

I'm experimenting with ASFS+RealTurb. Currently testing in-sim low, all ASFS turbulence-related settings low/off, RealTurb default except cloud turbulence 150.

There's a comment from Damian over at the HifiSim forum from April 2024:

ASFS turb is designed to be compatible with RealTurb and other turb-based mods. You can use them together if you'd like, for the best feature set and options along with multiple turbulence types, adjusting strength options in each as desired, or you can use one, or whatever you like. FWIW RealTurb focuses on turbulence and will likely always provide more depth in turbulence than ASFS default turbulence. They may need some time to adjust it now that ASFS is released.

Just for fun, I asked chatGPT: "can you tell me about active sky settings when using realturb"

Active Sky settings in conjunction with RealTurb can enhance your flight simulation experience by providing realistic weather effects and turbulence. Here’s how to optimize your settings:

Weather Engine Configuration: Ensure that Active Sky is set to download real-world weather data. Check the weather settings to specify the desired level of detail and update frequency.

Turbulence Settings: In Active Sky, adjust the turbulence settings to enable RealTurb effects. You can choose options for light, moderate, or severe turbulence based on your preference.

Cloud and Visibility Settings: Customize cloud layers and visibility settings to reflect realistic atmospheric conditions. This can include adjusting cloud density and layering.

Synchronization: Make sure that Active Sky is properly synchronized with your flight simulator to ensure that the weather conditions and RealTurb effects are accurately represented in-flight.

The sentence in bold is interesting. If it's true or not - I've got no idea.
