Avsim Used To Be A Fun And Educational Site…

Now?  Bickerfest after bickerfest over MSFS2020 vs MSFS2024.  Always negative, seldom enlightening.  I’ve been a site member in one screen name or another for well over 20 years.  This ain’t the Avsim I fondly remember.  My 2 cents.

Everything will be great again when 2024 get it's own forum.

Oh wait, that ain't happening, so you will have to continue to read threads on both sims.

The good, the bad, and the ugly. Do what I do, ignore!

MSFS 2020, what an amazing sim!

Well instead of ignoring just get you pop corn out.  Usually its  the same users just baiting other users, suppose its  abit like fishing, the  bigger the  bait  the more  bites they get  🙂

I would normally agree with you 100 % ... BUT ... I think the main ingredient is the pure, utter, frustration that many of us simmers feel about 2024. It's not so much that there's so much broken (there is) but that there appears very little we (or 3rd party developers) can actually do about it. No black magic tweaks ... no "in depth" advice - just wild guesses. Whatever tweak we try works one day, but not the next because we're always at the mercy of the Cloud servers.

We're in a very passive situation - and don't see Asobo being in a rush to fix things - so not much to be positive about (apart from enjoying the super eye-candy, that is).

I agree that this site is toxic at times, but 2024 really just added fuel to a fire that has been burning for a long time. For example, before 2024 was a thing people regularly trashed threads with anything to do with PMDG. You see the same thing happen when other developers are mentioned. Discussions about ATC vendors can be a flashpoint. When some of us had the audacity to suggest 2024 wasn’t ready for release (currently sporting a 44% rating on Steam) it just ended up throwing gas on the situation. That definitely wasn’t my intention, but i guess it doesn’t take much around here to get people going. Been that way for as long as i can remember.

I guess you missed the MS 2004 vs FSX days then and then FSX to P3D days etc.

The same for us P3D users that have MSFS users telling us we are wasting our time in the P3D Forum. I say each to their own you should enjoy your hobby in your way.

Before that it was XP users.

I would venture to guess that flight simulation was a much smaller hobby (far fewer people) 20 years ago. I seem to recall (as well) that "back in the day", discussions were likely more technical (and informative).

It may be that XBox has opened up a new world of new simmers...IMHO.

It's only natural that the forums are going to change over time...with, I believe, both positives and possibly some negatives.

Long term users of Avsim will also recall how quick Tom was to give vacations to "unruly" posters...as well as permanent disbarment. Personally, I hate to see us go back to those days. I don't envy the job of the moderators, but, I do respect what they do here...and my hats off to them.

Maybe it's the patience that comes with age...as a long term reader of Avsim, I've learned to "tune out the derailers" and value the contributions of those who have proven themselves with respectable and respectful posts time and again.

Most of the times I asked something on Avsim I got a quick, fiendly and usefull reply.

Therefore this forum is usefull to me. I use it to keep informed and get help sometimes.

Although I have an opinion on a lot of things I mostly keep them to myself.

Why? Because it is just an opinion, I'm not a politician who has to gain anything by voicing my opinion.

I dont care if somebody likes 2020 over 2024, go ahead enjoy what you enjoy.

Do you think it helps to flip your finger or honk your horn and try to educate somebody in traffic?

There's 100% someone covering over FSLabs around here.

Pure speculation and exactly what people are being accused of. Spreading FUD.

To paraphrase an old TV show..."Just the facts, man, just the facts".

I'm fairly certain that my Ignore option will be getting quite a workout soon. Unfortunately, because among the many confrontational posters there are some with a great deal of knowledge which I will be missing out on purely because of their toxicity.

Whatever tweak we try works one day, but not the next because we're always at the mercy of the Cloud servers.

It began with the forging of the great tools. One was given to the mighty river Amazonas. Another was bestowed upon the vast and all-seeing Searcher Froogle. But they were all of them deceived, for another tool was made. Deep in the land of Redmond, in the fires of Mount Rainier, the Dark Lord Nadellanta forged in secret a master cloud driven by AI, infusing it with his will to dominate all life.

One cloud to rule them all.

One by one, the free lands of perpetual software licenses fell to the power of the cloud subscription. Yet there were some who resisted. A last alliance of free software advocates and Linux penguins marched against the armies of Redmond, and on the very slopes of Mount Rainier, they fought for software freedom. Victory was near, but the power of the AI-driven cloud could not be undone. It was in this moment, when all hope had faded, that Torvaldis, son of free software, took up his father's sword and fought on.

very free 😂 after the great J. R. R. Tolkien

For me, it's still a nice forum where everyone can share their experiences.

Unfortunately, some people are too passionate and react accordingly, but anyone can ignore them and still enjoy the forum, even if it is shared between FS2020 and FS2024 users.

There's nothing wrong with this forum, it's the attitude of some members that's the problem. When the mods discover it, they issue a vacation pass. A ban sometimes is the better option.
