What's with the FSX Weather Engine?

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to fly with actual weather conditions from an airport within 4 miles of my house, so I know what the weather conditions are. When I start realworld weather, the window shows the actual winds and temperature and an inadequate description of cloud cover. When I start the flight, the wind is from the opposite direction and deviating 180 degrees. Is Microsoft's FSX weather engine broken? There's nothing like taking off with a 90 degree 15 knot crosswind and halfway down the runway have the wind direction change instantly 180 degrees, and it's not realworld.Art

>Is there a real world weather reporting station on field at>the airport?Yes. As stated, the window after downloading the weather shows the correct conditions. They just aren't experienced in the flight.ArtBiostar TF560-A2+, Athlon 64X2-6000+, 4GB RAM, Geforce 8800GTS-320MB, 500W PSU, 250GB HD, FSX (SP1-SP2), Vista Home Premium 32 bit, CH Yoke & Pedals, 22" WS LCD monitor

>Is it repeatable?-share the airport with us so we can give it>a try. That's a good idea. The airport is KDAB (Daytona Beach, FL). When I download the weather, winds are reported as 016 @ 15/20 knots, which is okay. In the sim taxiing on the airport, half of the airport has winds 133 @ 11 knots and the other half has winds 017 @ 16 knots.ArtBiostar TF560-A2+, Athlon 64X2-6000+, 4GB RAM, Geforce 8800GTS-320MB, 500W PSU, 250GB HD, FSX (SP1-SP2), Vista Home Premium 32 bit, CH Yoke & Pedals, 22" WS LCD monitor

Ok-I just tried it.The most glaring thing I saw was the metar report used by FS is almost 4 hours old and things have changed quite a bit since then. Fs reported wind 17 to 19 knts and the last report NNE at 11 knts.I taxied all over the airport and its runways and found the winds and wind direction varied by 1 here and there and 2 knts. here and there(pretty cool if this is a "feature") but did not see what you report. It will be interesting to see what others report. Just tried updating on the hour (when metars are changed-5 before) and it now shows 016 at 15/20-real metar shows nne at 11.From the learning center:http://www.mediafire.com/imgbnc.php/1b5baf...b9f427f694g.jpgMy blog:http://geofageofa.spaces.live.com/http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/187715.jpg

Thanks. I must have something broken somewhere.I wonder if the following in the .cfg file has anything to do with it and if anyone sees anything wrong.[Weather]WindshieldPrecipitationEffects=1MinGustTime=10MaxGustTime=500MinGustRampSpeed=1MaxGustRampSpeed=20MinVarTime=5MaxVarTime=50MinVarRampSpeed=10MaxVarRampSpeed=75TurbulenceScale=0.004000WeatherServerAddress=fs2k.zone.comWeatherServerPort=80WeatherGraphDataInDialog=0AdjustForMagVarInDialog=1DynamicWeather=2ArtBiostar TF560-A2+, Athlon 64X2-6000+, 4GB RAM, Geforce 8800GTS-320MB, 500W PSU, 250GB HD, FSX (SP1-SP2), Vista Home Premium 32 bit, CH Yoke & Pedals, 22" WS LCD monitor

"the results are not entirely predictable." That seems to hold for pretty much all the features and performance in FSX!

>Active Sky does make a much improved weather engine which in>my experience can mimic current conditions quite well... most>of the time.Problem solved (I hope). I have ASv6.5 installed on the same computer with FS9. With a few tweaks, I found that it works with FSX and the initial result appears to be more realistic weather.Art
