Anybody Fly a Visual Appr into KASE RWY 33?

Recommended Posts

Guest byoung

I think FS ATC can't handle this high altitude terrain approach?? I haven't used Radar Contact for awhile, I wonder how it would do on an approach into KASE RWY 15 or 33? Radar Contact is just IFR with the current version... I know KASE (Aspen, Co) is considered a "dangerous" airport to fly into. RWY 15 seems to be easier??Whew! Thanks!

You might want to use the real plates-I don't think any atc could be programmed for this. Notice the minimums on the Roaring Fork visual approach rwy 15 (6000 ft. ceiling and 10 miles visibility!):Also have a look at the "remarks" section!http://www.mediafire.com/imgbnc.php/1b5baf...b9f427f694g.jpgMy blog:http://geofageofa.spaces.live.com/http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/188133.jpg

Forget Rwy 33 at KASE - even for real world terms its not used for landing expect by a very few very light aircraft very seldom. The normal pattern at KASE is landing on Rwy 15 and takeoff on Rwy 33.This is somethin which FS does not handle - period. I don't know about RC, but for the default FS ATC - cancel IFR and fly in to Rwy 15.Jim Vile has updated the KASE approaches so the I-ASE LOC approach can be used. http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?CatID...fcad&DLID=97399The I-PKN localizer is misplaced at KASE - being a few miles south of the airport and offset quite a bit. It's correctly placed in FS2004 and FSX - but you use that localizer only for departure from KASE.Since real world arriving aircraft will be a few miles out head to head with departing aircraft - upon departure you have to turn left as soon as stable to course 270 until you intercept the backcourse of the I=PKN localizer - then climb out on the localizer backcourse of 300 degrees.http://204.108.4.16/d-tpp/0804/05889ASPEN.PDFhttp://204.108.4.16/d-tpp/0804/05889LINDZ.PDFThat is also an important departure if visibility is low. Not only would you be head to head with landing aircraft on a straight out climb from Rwy 33 - but there is high terrain very close to the straight out course - 9,000 ft + at 7 DME and even higher slightly east.

I just made this video a few weeks ago and sent it to a good buddy in COS who flew into KASE for years as a captain for Rocky Mt. Airways. I told him I thought it was strange that FSX atc sent me to 33 for a visual landing. Am pretty sure he said they DID use rwy 33. I remember he said there was 100 ft elevation variance at one end of the rwy. I just fwded this post to him and asked him to comment. http://blip.tv/file/816566Bruce

Reggie -Capt. Denton's reply:"Bruce, We did use runway 33 if the conditions allowed and it being the fastest way in. We landed twin otters and dash7s because of their STOL abilities. any other aircraft would be wise to use runway 15. Larry"Bruce
