Unable to start MSFS 2020. 2024 works fine

Featured Replies

Just fishing for ideas. I am unable to run MSFS 2020 since a few weeks or few months ago. I currently have MSFS 2024 and it runs totally fine without any problems. But when I start MSFS 2020, the screen disappears about half way during loading of the program or sooner.

Here is what I have done so far:
Uninstalled MSFS 2020
Reinstalled it. Same problem
Nothing in community folder.
Tried starting in safe mode. Same problem

I have the greatest and almost latest hardware running at default settings with no overclocking. AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D with 64GB of ram, RTX 4090
I have tried several Nvidia drivers with no success.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Have you by chance installed a mod called MSFS Map Enhancement (Google vs Bing) ?

That's really helpful.

Have you tried starting it from the Xbox App? Mine suddenly stopped starting from the desktop shortcut, but loads fine from the Xbox app.

Yes, a long time ago, but I have not used for several months and I'm sure MSFS 2020 was working just a few weeks ago. But I'll search for this in the etc file.

Thanks

Yes, always. Not even sure where to find the executable anymore, but I'll look for it.

Thanks

I did find the executable and it would not start either from the exec of Xbox. Very bizarre

Strange, I'm having this same issue, only with REX AccuSeason.

Quits to desktop within seconds of reaching the UI.

I was having somewhat of this same issue and I turned off Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling and it fixed my issue.

It is the NVIDIA App. If you have the app installed you must use MSFS in DX12, the sim will not start in DX11. Go to the User CFG for MSFS and change it to DX12 and it will fire up. If you are not using the app then remove it and it will work.

THANK YOU! 👍👍👍  That did it.  I can't believe I wasted that many hours because of something that simple to fix if you know the answer. Again, thank you so much for your help 👍👍👍

Thanks but in my case, forcing DX12 solved the issue (thanks to jjeffreys)

No problem, it is one that a lot of folks are having, including me at one time.

Great you found that!  I was about to post another fix for when 2020 for some reason won't start:  right-click on the start icon and select App settings.  From there chose Reset, then choose the first of two options, Repair.  This worked twice for me in the past, one recently.
