Question on DLSS vs TAA on MSFS2024

Featured Replies

Hello Gang and greetings.

I've been following several threads where graphic settings are discussed.  One thing I've noticed is that everyone raves about DLSS but I am finding out that DLSS on my rig is blurry whereas TAA is super sharp and makes the panels readable.  I ask myself......what am I missing?  Any suggestions on where to start?

My specs are below in my sig.

Thanks folks.

Sincerely,

Dennis D. Müllert

the first thing i would ask is if you're happy with how TAA looks (and presumably performs), why would you bother changing it?

DLLS 4 will gain you some performance over TAA, if you use the 'quality' setting. On my rig, with DLSS set to 'DLAA', I find the display sharper out to the horizon.

Looking at your system specs I have to wonder why your even messing around with DLSS in the first place.  Is your monitor 4K ? If not then at what point is your GPU at full utilization (slammed at 100%)?

From my experience, the only scenario in which DLSS has an edge in terms of visual quality is when you are looking at mesh-like objects like airport fences or antenna arrays, trees (and in this case, only against the sky) or powerlines. Otherwise, TAA is much better, especially with glass cockpits. DLAA gives slightly less blurry displays than other DLSS modes, but it still suffers from the same "lag" that makes using input fields with flashing cursors in Garmin avionics a real PITA.

IMO after extensive looking and testing:  DLSS4 w/ ANY preset is highly overrated including the oft recommended preset K compared to TAA and of course DLSS gives you smearing glass cockpit characters.

If I want blurry, I turn on DLSS. It does a great job.

I find visual quality with DLSS/DLAA to be higher quality than TAA.

I find DLSS/DLAA to be better quality than TAA.  Any blurring is minimal in glass cockpits.  I wonder if filters and sharpening settings are skewing your results?

I dont think many would subscribe to that but you do you .

multiple settings impact this including what level of DLSS which determines downscaling and subsequently upscaling and one of the biggest impacts on blurries from what I have seen is FPS.  The lower the FPS the greater the ghosting/blurriness using DLSS.  As has also been proved recently filters can have a big impact, I am sure sharpening does as well but for myself like you I have crystal clear glass displays using DLSS.

That's nice good for you.  Oh yeah it's got to be the DETAILS filter, of course why didn't I think of that 🙃🤣   It's me and a whole lot of others who find TAA better because there is ZERO blurring and absolutely positively ANY form of DLSS generates blurring moving characters in all glass cockpits, with or without any filters operating.  That being said those characters are fairly easy to ignore and occupy a tiny space, but again, DLSS-DLAA offer exactly nothing over TAA here.   If GPU or total sim performance was substantially improved with it I'd use it, but that is not the case.

I shall refrain from any more suggestions if I'm just going to get sarcasm - I mentioned filters, not a specific filter.

Yes I know, and that is why I said 'minimal blurring' here.  as I get minimal blurring, and I don't use filters,  I wondered if it was filters causing more blurring for you.

At 1440p Ultra Wide, DLAA is better then TAA on my end.

Same. I prefer a bit blurriness than the awful shimmering I see when using TAA. Guess those who fly mostly airliners prefer TAA because they rarely look at the scenery while those flying mostly GA prefer DLSS.
