FSX Phil Taylor's latest Tweak

Recommended Posts

Hi AllPhil Taylor has posted this tweak on his blog:"Try adding this to the [DISPLAY] section of the FSX.cfg file:ShadowMappingQuality=nwhere n can be 0,1,2,3.The 1st 2 values affect the size of the shadow map. The 2nd 2 values affect the filtering algorithm"Should the new line read: ShadowMappingQuality=0,1,2,3. or should it read:ShadowMappingQuality=1orShadowMappingQuality=2or, and so on.Its not very clear from the post but he does talk about the "first two values" and the "second 2 values". I suspect the individual settings but just want to be sure!!Any help would be appreciated.Peter Hayes

Peter, the answer to the riddle is in the structure:ShadowMappingQuality=nNote the singular "n"... ;)O or 1 will affect the size of the shadow map.2 or 3 will affect the filtering algorithm.

BillThat's what I thought It goes back to my "scientific" days when you clould use a "string' to denote "n" as well as a single integer.Any ideas on which number might be the best value??Many thanksPeter Hayes

I usually don't have shadows turned on. Would this tweak still help me?Manny

Manny,It's not a performance tweak ... but rather a visual tweak. Since you're not displaying shadows, such a tweak would have no effect on your experience I should think.Cheers,

Bill,If you are around and have the time I'm still a little confused around this issue. As I read it I thought that what he was saying was that there are 4 numbers:0,1,2,3"where n" (single number) "can be 0,1,2,3.""The 1st 2 values affect the size of the shadow map. The 2nd 2 values affect the filtering algorithm."What I thought he meant was 0,1 are the values which "affect the size of the shadow map".and values 2,3 are the values which "affect the filtering algorithm".Therefore as I (probably wrongly} thought either 0 or 1 will decide size and 2 or 3 would set filtering and that one would have to decide the parameter that they wanted to adjust ie.........either size or filter if "n" represented in fact a single numberClue me in please.

Maybe it's a two-bit binary value, where the first bit (0/1) controls the size, and the second (0/2) controls the filter? 3, of course would be 'both on'.

>Bill,>>If you are around and have the time I'm still a little>confused around this issue.Actually, that is precisely my understanding, and is what I stated in my previous reply:ShadowMappingQuality=1 OR ShadowMappingQuality=2 OR ShadowMappingQuality=3 OR ShadowMappingQuality=4In any case, I've written to Phil directly and asked him to clarify the issue. Either he'll chime in or I'll relay any reply I receive... ;)

The only other possibility I can think of would beShadowMappingQuality=0123as I do not see 'n' as being anything but a single value or as Tim pointed out, binary, but what I just posted would go against the structure 'n' as presented in the original exampleThe description would tend to suggest the 4 digit example aboveBueller? Bueller?
