Ultimate Defrag Yes or No?

Recommended Posts

Tom, try it again. It didn't take. Files designated to the outer edge are call High Performance and colored Magenta. You should have a bit of a magenta ring around the outer edge.It shows the magenta ring right after the defrag, but if you go back and analyze it will only show the files being contiguous.

Thanks

Tom

Mine is not the 08 version.......But I like the idea of having the FSX set as priority to the outer platter.......

I use UltimateDefrag 2008 and before that I used the old version. I have never had any problems with it, and once you set it up, it is "run it and forget it".What I mean by that is, once you have it move FSX to the outer edge of the disk, then after that you just do regular defrags. FSX stays put and it's nice and fast.RhettFS box: E8500 (@ 3.80 ghz), AC Freezer 7 Pro, ASUS P5E3 Premium, BFG 8800GTX 756 (nVidia 169 WHQL), 4gb DDR3 1600 Patriot Cas7 7-7-7-20 (2T), PC Power 750, WD 150gb 10000rpm Raptor, Seagate 500gb, Silverstone TJ09 case, Vista Ultimate 64ASX Client: AMD 3700+ (@ 2.6 ghz), 7800GT

I've use both O&O and Ultimate Defrag and personally I prefer Ultimate Defrag. It give me much more options on how I want my hard drive drfragged. Just make sure you review all the options it offers. The latest version is especially effective.

>LOL I have no clue...I just click it and it opens.....>I'd bet those who can't open that file are using Firefox as a browser. IE7 shows it just fine. However, it should be shown as a jpg to ensure all browsers can view it.Phill

If you are running Vista you need to read the manual. When you use UD Vista places a lot of system files on your hard drive. These show up as fragmented files and cannot be "fixed."As for UD - GET IT. This program will unfragment huge drives in a very short time - compared to other programs.fb

I have used O&O Defrag and UltimateDefrag, but with the latter I cocked-up my HD to such an extend that a rebuild was all I could do... and I used a recommendation based on a review in Avsim's review section. OK, maybe I did something wrong and'll have to revert to the manual again, but after 4 rebuilds in so many days I'll stay put for a while with O&O. My verdict, UD give you a lot more options and I like the idea of putting the FSX folder on the outside for performance, but what scares me is moving the MFT out of the way - closer to the inner circles - that's now if you does not have a massive HD (mine only 40GB). Maybe one of above can write a decent note on applying UD for FSX, or perhaps if one of UD's employees read this, create notes for all high performance games. It'll give them an edge over the competitors.Other options is Diskeeper and PerfectDisk - none of which I tested. All I know you can use PD to move the MFT to the inner circles to make space for FSXDL + FSXA + ASX + AGX +... +... +...Pierre

Hi Rick,Well then, I must be an old geezer as well :)I've been using Perfect Disk for years (currently the 2008 version) and it has never let me down. Some other Defraggers appear to do a better job when using software like FSX and FS9 with enormous texture file databases. However, both sims seem to work fine for me and I don't see a lot of hard drive activity following the initial loading sequences.Perfect Disk may not organize data on your drive in sequential named order but at least it can carry out its operations faithfully and without fuss and risk of corruption - happened to me when I tried O&O - apparently caused by my early version of XP SP2. I'm still wondering why this same issue has never surfaced with Perfect Disk.Sometimes it's better the devil you know ;)Mike

Hi All.I want to say a Big Thanks to everyone for the great responses to my question.I've decided, at least for now, not install the Ultimate Defrag trial and to continue using Perfect Disk 2008. I really like the idea of just setting it and forgetting it. I don't think I want to babysit my defragger at this point in time. Also, I just recently reformatted and reinstalled my system. I sure don't want to take a risk and possibly mess it up.Best WishesflykingVirtual AviatorSystem Specs:Used to be Vista (XP Now)AMD Athlon 64 2413MHzNVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT, 256MBMemory: 3071MBSB X-FI Xtreme Gamer
