OS and XP where to for WIN10 from Oct 2025

Featured Replies

As I have a perfectly serviceable high end PC but one that does not have the security chip feature now required for WIN 11 so my XP use has been predicated on a relatively stable OS WIN10. What does XP do with an ageing OS architecture? Not much it will have to go with WIN 11 and keep the other OS's foremost - MACOS and Linux. I have not seen this issue raised by Laminar other than obliquely.

Microsoft made my decision for me - despite a recent 32GBRAM and 16GBVID no security chip so no WIN11. I do not need to buy a new machine nor can do so - just not interested, still got a stable WIN7 running on another machine.  WIN 10 is now underlined as is.

I will now move my OS over to a Linux system and go with the sim and XP etc there.

Done Linux before (way too long ago alas plus Unix) understand the distributions versions and that stuff etc, Main issues for me are comms that is WIFI and Internet connectivity to a Linux boot up. Got to sort out my own motherboard bootup status too.

The adventure continues - thanks Microsoft done me a big favour!

Looked for that option when building new PC but feels the hurdle would be great enough for me(P3D, IXEG733, Garmin trainer... just to name a few), so I went for a stripped down win11 and only manually update with known non-problematic critical safety update.

One can buy TPM pcie cards but overall that's a great excuse to test the waters. Wireless connectivity shouldn't be a problem these days unless you have a uber bleeding edge motherboard.

LR tends to support windows versions for a couple/few years after EOL. Quick search of the dev blog shows winXP stayed on their radar for 2 years post extended EOL. Can't find when they dropped 7.

Friendly reminder: WHITELIST AVSIM IN YOUR AD-BLOCKER. Especially if you're on a modern CPU that can run a flight simulator well. These web servers aren't free...

blingthinger - correct so even another two years is not a lot given the update product improvement schedule from LR. Wonder if that was the reason for them coming up with MS2024 over at the Softies. Either way no WIN 11 your screwed even though you have a ripper of a PC.

They dropped win7 with XP12.

Why. Nothing wrong with Win 10. Only one making you move is you. There will be many win10 users out there for years to come, unless ms do something underhanded.

There are options to install Win11 even when you don’t have TPM module be it hardware or emulated in EFI.

Here ya go:

You really should install Win11.

Not necessarily. It will still possibly run. They're just saying that if it doesn't, they don't care anymore.

One could obviously argue that the statement that win 10 would be the "LAsT WindOWs vErsION ever!!!" was mostly marketing hot air, but also...stuff isn't changing that much anymore. Vulkan is largely mature. File system won't change...chances are good that XP13 just might run on win10... I guess unless they intentionally block it. But I'm not sure they've done that with 12, have they? I wonder if anyone's got it working on win 7?

Don't get me wrong here either: I'm in no way trying to stop your leap into linux.

Gotcha. So about 2 yrs then as far as I can tell. Same-ish as winXP.

Win11 violates just about every concevieble databreach you can imagine. Just to think, once upon a time, it too hackers to collect and steal your data, now win11 does it as part of the OS. Cannot think of 1 good reason to downgrade to win11.

Because you can disable all the “invasions” … but any website you visit and you give up privacy right, far more so than any OS attempts.

Apart from really recommending win11 over win10, I honestly don't see anything blocking a user of xp12 continuing to use win 10.

Maybe the next version can impose some limitations but for the time being win10 is good for xp12 I guess?

I tried a few times to move to Linux. I'm also the good old days of UNIX, C, ksh and bash, Perl... and I never really got as deeply into Linux as I did with Unix but I want to use MSFS too and running it in Linux wouldn't be easy...

I guess you missed the bit about what they are using AI for.

https://fedoraproject.org/kde/

The only "all in one" distro I'd recommend. Well maintained by professional developers. KDE's Plasma desktop offers a Windows 10-like interface experience, but is very customizable. WiFi should not be an issue nowadays, unless you have some exotic hardware.

NVidia drivers are a weak point (applies to all distros though), but here's a guide for Fedora: https://github.com/oddmario/NVIDIA-Fedora-Driver-Guide

Alternatively, try Pop!_OS, which is built on a customized Ubuntu and has a NVidia spin, but (still) basically comes with Ubuntu's dreadful GNOME desktop: https://system76.com/pop/download/

One thing you will notice once you get X-Plane up and running is lower loading times (this is an effect I have observed for both Win 10 and Win 11 vs. Linux on the exact same hardware).

Bjoern thanks for the links done 3 different flash boot versions so far like the look of this one. WINE seemed ok,

OFT so I will move on except to say almost need a speciality thread for non WIN systems and this sim. Currently rediscovering Linux so far all good except display and drivers etc - then again this new monitor I have does not play well with WIN or XP either.

kde is good if you need to keep the familiarity of windows.

the lastest version of gnome has me hooked tho, very, very pleased with it, hot corners especially (recently found my mac has hot corners to), so much so I actually get quite frustrated whenever I touch a windows machine. Also nemo for files (from the team that make the Cinemon desktop).

Twice the Mrs windows laptop has forced itself onto windows 11, twice I've had to set it back to 10 because she got so angry at not being able to find anything and stuff not working properly. Don't know what to do with that when 10 goes eol, she'll probably just have to get used to 11 and I'll just have to waste a load of time trying to work out how to get it at least partly working.
