Is it possible to belly land? What's with "Auto-gear?"

I am trying to belly land a spitfire, but everytime I do, the landing gear pops out after a few seconds of skidding on my belly and pushes the plane up so it's rolling on the gear. Is it possible to belly land in FSX? I remember this happening with other planes too.
