July 14, 2025Jul 14 For a mind-blowing experience, fly an amphib plane into the Grand Canyon and land on the Colorado River. I have done this in both MS2020 and MS2024, and there is no comparison -- the textures and rock strata in 2024 are far superior to 2020, far more realistic. On top of that, if you taxi your plane onto a sandbar in the river, you can get out and walk around (not possible in 2020) on the floor of the Canyon -- or even try climbing it if you dare!

This isn't a good comparison. Because of the event they held for content creators at the Grand Canyon, that area is mostly handcrafted, and, if it's not, it some special attention. It's not a good baseline for other canyons in the SIM.
July 14, 2025Jul 14 The fact is, even granted that the Grand Canyon has had special attention, the superior rock and ground textures in 2024 vs. 2020 are evident everywhere. If you want a fairer comparison, try flying and landing in some other canyon and you will see this. Aside from that point, the Grand Canyon, both in reality and its modeling in MS2024, is a vast area covering hundreds of square miles, so this in itself is a major advance.

When they release the latest update for 2020, which I hope is in my lifetime, and it incorporates the new Bing maps, it will be perfect for my use. I hate fixing things that aren't broken. I do agree that if you want to fly with no hassle, stick with MSFS2020. I toggled back and forth a bit but MSFS2024 is the only sim that I fly (having deleted MSFS2020). I do mostly GA flying with smaller aircraft, and the ground handling / taxiing in MSFS2024 won me over (no more feeling like I am on ice). But I can certainly understand someone who chooses / sees MSFS2020 as the better sim right now depending on how they use it.

Right now, the only truly 2024-native planes (I think) are the INI birds and the 777s. Even the Black Square Starship, the iFLY Max, the JF RJ and F28, and the Fenix are all created as "compatible." This is not ideal. This is because these use the old .dds graphics. I think some of the VRAM issues people are running into is exasperated by these .dds files. I have fewer problems with the native birds like the a350 and the 777 than I do the compatible. The Fenix is particular is proving creaky on my system. At the same time, taking a "native or bust" approach really limits your options. It is an approach I am thinking of taking and treating the sim like I am freshly moving from a different platform. I know, everyone's mileage varies, but I do think native (not compatible) is the best option.

For example, the native walk around feature allows you to operate doors, covers, etc like any other 2024 plane. And I know for a fact it uses the 2024 LODs, as Nick spoke at length about all the intricacies that go into managing that process.

That is one plane I haven't dug too far into the liveries for.

Agree, the only time I've seen this is when going from free flight globe to the flight. The ground texture transitions from that, to the normal sim night lighting. This is what night lights look for me (SU3)

Your screenshots are pretty low (2000'??)...go up to 10k+ and it becomes much more obvious. I do agree, down low (under 3-4000') the lights look very good but the higher you go, the more you see the illumination mask. This regressed in 2024....the sepia mask needs to be pushed much further out (40+ miles) if they are going to keep that 'feature'. It worked OK in 2020.... This is on approach to YMML, but I came down from 32,000. I hadn't noticed the sepia mask at all. But hey, I'm not saying it doesn't happen. Maybe it's based on where you are?
