Kodiak frustration - How's the Caravan in MSFS 2024?

What is wrong with the SWS PC12 FM, I fly it all the time, and it flies fine?

I haven’t flown it in about 6 mos…?

back then its handling was rather “atypical” in a number of regards.

based on your reco, tho, I’m gonna give it a go this weekend, because I do love that plane IRL. 🤙

  • This is the plane I fly in Papua as well. Great fun! And the PNG 4 pack just launched on Orbx this week. Those four packs plus the Porter are some of the best bush flying.

  • Just wanted to echo support for the Blackbird PC-6 Porter. Flies smoothly in both MS24 and MS20 with my system (Intel i7-10700 2.9 GHz 32 GB RAM, RTX3080 10 GB). An ITT bug was recently fixed by Black

The Kodiak has had flight model issues since its release in 2020.  Canadian CPT Mustache released a flight model mod that was much better if you can find it, but it's gone off .to as far as I know.

To your original question. the Caravan in 2024 flies nicely.    I don't know about realism, but it will do the job as a decent bush plane.  I almost preferred it to the Black Square Caravan in MSFS2020.

Seems like the 210 is a break from the standard Carenado fair in the FM department.

Bob, I took it up and you’re right - it does fly fine (and far, far better than the last time I flew it)!

it’s a bit sloppy in the pattern but not overly so , and I no longer feel as tho I’m fighting the aircraft.

On reflection, tho, my experience with the Turbine Duke and FSR500 have always been superlative, so they’ll remain my turboprops of choice. 🤙

I highly, HIGHLY recommend the Blackbird (Milviz) PC-6 Porter if you're willing to look at different airplanes though.  It was the first flight model I really fell in love with in 2020 and it's great in 2024.  I'm not certain it's being sold for 2024 yet but if you just copy the folder from the 2020 Community folder to the 2024 one, it's solid.  There's no better platform for flying in Papua, from performance to visibility.  It was designed in real life specifically for this mission after all.  Nosewheel aircraft simply aren't as capable at this kind of flying.

Any tips on where to find the Kodiak flight model mod? I’d like to give that a try before abandoning it.

The PC-12 sounds like a good option, although it doesn’t look as rugged as the Kodiak or Caravan, but it doesn’t matter, I’m not giving SWS any more of my money unless the address the Kodiak… even if the PC12 flies fine. I would consider the PC12 included in the sim before giving SWS any more money, but apperently it’s not very well implemented from reviews I’ve read.

Thanks for chiming in! It seems you’re the only one who’s flown it here… 🙂

I used the 208 in 2020 extensively before I bought the Kodiak and thought it was actually better in some regards than the Kodiak, but most GA flyers at the time it came out, insisted the Kodiak was king. I think many people, me included for a time, want to believe that because it was so difficult to fly it was somehow more realistic, but I now think I was just wanting it to be realistic and it’s actually bloody dangerous.

Anyway, I digress.

Do you know if the vanilla 208 Caravan has enough implemented systems in 2024 to feel like it’s worth spending some time in?

Why not just try it? It's a stock plane. It's very nicely modelled, hand flying is fine ( I don't have any trouble with the Kodiak in that regard either) but has a bug in 2024 that gives it a Dutch role when AP is engaged.

I don't; I think it's payware now.  You might have to check his discord: Canadian Captain Moustache.  Sorry to tease something you maybe can't get.  I was curious if I still had it but doesn't look like it; I probably dumped it with the Kodiak.

I often use the default model in FSeconomy. While the 3D model is great and the flight dynamics are decent, the system simulation is pretty basic. Especially considering I used the community-modified addon in 2020, which added a bunch of little details that made it way more interesting and interactive. That said, the G1000 simulation by Working Title is fantastic and makes up for a lot of the limitations. So, I’d encourage you to give it a try while we wait for the new Caravan from Blackbox, which they’ve confirmed is expected to be released in Q4.
I hope it helps!

I  used to fly the Kodiak all the time when I first got it. Haven't flown it since I got the PC12, The Turbine Duke and the Blacksquare TBM 850. Now I think the best flying GA aircraft I have ever owned, are the TBM850 and the Turbine Duke with the PC 12 coming in  third. The only negative about the Duke, is the decreased visibility due to the engine cowlings.

There is a paid update coming to the Kodiak for 2024. Hopefully, they fix the flight model as part of the update.

From SWS:

“This work is also done with FS2024 in mind, as we are trying to make the FS2020 version of the plane work as well as possible in FS2024. It will also be among the very first planes we will upgrade to FS2024 native (paid upgrade), as it can fill many roles in the career system and has been a community favorite since its release.“

Chris, it is similar to the Kodiak and I prefer it.  I flew it a lot in 2024 early after release because the specs and flying character work well with the G1000.  Honestly, it would be fine as a lower tier payware aircraft..  Try it, the price is right.

I’ll give it a go for sure. Thanks.

How long ago did they say this? They are slower than snails. 😕
