October 25, 2025Oct 25 So I finally got it. Ryzen 9 9950X3D is running way more quieter than my old i9 13900. So far I'm very happy! For the $1000+ Avoid these: MSI Godlike ($1200+ and full of issues, USB ports that don't supply enough power, 10G NIC port that just stops working - most likely overheats, and still limited in memory channels based on the CPUs IMC anyway so pointless to have 4 slots, only two PCIe gen 5 slots at full speed, etc.) ASUS ROG Crosshair Extreme ($900+ much the same issues as MSI). ASRock (stay a million miles away from any ASRock product) Gigabyte Aorus Xtreme ($800) If one has to go the Xtreme route, Gigabytes is currently the best option (especially if you plan to use a lot of USB ports). BUT, going middle-tier (boards in the $500 range) will provide equal performance and less issues. Whatever the choice, stick with 2 Memory modules if you go with a 2 channel IMC CPU, 4 modules will be slower. Either 2X32GB (64GB) or 2X48GB (96GB). I know how to make my wife happy. She has no interest in flight simming whatsoever but, she's very happy I do! THE SECRET: Every once in a while, I show my wife the online price of the real thing. Last year, it was the price of a real Garmin unit (about U$20,000) along with the price of the PMS50 (U$50.00). 🙂 Edited November 30, 2025Nov 30 by Matt Sdeel

January 18Jan 18 Don't believe everything you read. Amd chips have as much problems as Intel chips. I also was at a point where I had to choose between amd or intel core ultra 285k. I went with the intel chip and despite everything I read I am very happy I did. I run every setting on ultra and also use vr and it crushes everything I throw at it. Also having a 5090 helps.

I use both Intel and AMD … not had any significant issues with AMD nor Intel, but I did skip the 13 and 14 series of Intel primarily due to Intel’s lower performance compared to AMD. If someone is looking for a good Flight Sim CPU, suggest they hold out until March/April when the AMD 9950X3D2 (3D Cache on both CCDs) will be available to retail outlets. Even at 50Mhz lower boost speed than the 9950X3D, the 9950X3D2 is 6-10% faster. Plenty of other data sources that provide similar results in MSFS 2024. From Tom’s hardware comparing the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K comes out even worse than the Intel 14900K and much worse than AMD 9950X3D or 9800X3D: https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/cpus/amd-ryzen-9-9950x3d-vs-intel-core-ultra-9-285k-faceoff Agree on NOT believing everything you read 😉 hehe…. but if you can find a flaw in some of the testing results above, please do share. January 18Jan 18 Author After always having used Intel and with very high requirements on performance doing all my flying in high resolution VR using complex airliners in and out of payware airports and always on Vatsim with lots of other traffic around me, I couldn't be more happy with the 9950X3D I'm using now paired with a 5090. I don't see myself going back to Intel unless they release something which clearly outperforms the equivalent top chip from AMD. The 9950X3D2 sounds very interesting, will keep my eyes open for it 👍
