roads and interstates

Recommended Posts

Can anyone suggest a program(freeware preffered) that will display major interstates and roads. I have UTX USA and FSD,which both do a fine job naming cities and towns, but having to pause the flight while checking a nearby Atlas for which road I'm flying along is a hassle.I thought FSD would have that capability when I purchased it,but I am disappointed it doesn't. FSX sp2.Thanksskip

I don't know of a specific program that will do it. You can always buy a united states map book. The only place I've seen highway/major road names is on the Reality XP GNS430W that I have installed in some of my planes.

Do a search for FSWidgets, get the 'browser' (free)version. Use the 'Hybred' map and you can follow your flight in Google Earth, zoom in and you can see the road names, towns, etc.XP Pro SP2-FSX SP2AMD FX60-8800GTS-2 Gigs RAMFEX-GEX-UTUSA-FSGenesis-and a bunch of other stuffComputer optimized by www.fs-gs.com

I use the very cheap Abacus EZ-GPS4 (and it is $USD13 at present) works well. There is also some freeware (one is called FSXGET??) that uses Google earth which is another great way to display roads, etc. Another is FSX Google Earth (FSXGE) Flight Recorder from http://fsx-google-earth-flight-recorder.so...e.informer.com/. I also use FS Earth (payware) on a second network computer - excellent. But I still find that paper map is still very useful in finding out where you are.Peter Hayes

Skip,The freeware FSM Moving Map by Rana Hossain does exactly what you are asking. It's in the library as fsmmm120.zip.The map shows the real-time location of your plane, along with any nearby AI traffic. If all you care about is roads on the map display, you can even scan a highway map to a jpg file and use that after calibrating it as described in the documentation.FSMMM was last updated for FS9, and I believe you must have that sim (or FS2002) to install it. But once installed in the older sim, FSX will recognize it automatically. Just be sure you also have FSUIPC4 installed (unregistered version OK).Try it first using one of Matt Fox's pre-calibrated sectional charts to see if you like the interface. Example: us_sectionals_pack_1.zip, also in the library. Sectionals show most roads. But if you find them too cluttered, then experiment with custom highway maps.John
