2024 Beta|Try turning off Off Screen Terrain on USEROPT.CFG

Featured Replies

Is this a fix for the horrendous RdrThread issue that is plaguing folks? I had to revert to SU2 because it was like the cache wasn't holding textures after a short period. If I didn't look left, for example, for 10-15 seconds and then I glanced over it was like it had to reload every texture that came into view. RdrThread would max, frames would drop to 10-20 for 3-5 seconds while everything re-rendered.

If this workaround mitigates that I may have to opt back into the beta and give it a whirl.

Doesn't do anything for me.  The setting was on ultra in the sim, when I set it to 0 in the usercfg and then go back into the sim it is still on ultra and no performance difference at all.  Let me know if you think I am doing anything wrong.

Best settings for me in the usercfg are shadows 6144 and raytraced shadows off in the sim (saves VRAM maybe as well as better framerate?), a zero against that stupid VRAM / GPU message to turn it off, and trees to medium in the sim - saves frames (and hopefully VRAM), and trees are not needed at high or ultra - you will see if you try medium.

Does anyone think this is getting like FSX / P3D ?    That is the world of cutting edge flight sims I suppose.

Rob (but call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind).

I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio.

Intel 14900K in a Z790 motherboard with water cooling, RTX 4080, 32 GB 6000 CL30 DDR5 RAM, W11 and MSFS on Samsung 980 Pro NVME SSD's.  Core Isolation Off, Game Mode Off.

Same here, no effect. Guess another snake oil fix, not really surprised, why the heck disabling this option should suddenly free up so many resources that FPS boost up. I should have known it better, but then, testing doesnt hurt, no 😉

I tried a couple of brief flights with the precaching setting disabled but it did not make a difference in performance so I re-enabled it in userCfg.opt.  However, this was a setting for which I was having difficulty assigning a value when I first installed MSFS 2024 so I ran (3) related tests.

Two days ago when landing at KTPA/19L, I had stuttering during the last approximately 500' of descent that people have been complaining about.  I had not experienced this before in MSFS 2024, still experimenting with it (SU2) with occasional flights.  After seeing this post and being re-motivated to understand its impact on performance, I repeated the landing above with the same runway, same aircraft but I changed the precaching setting from LOW to ULTRA.  I had set it to LOW reasoning that with my mid-range system, I wanted to conserve VRAM and pre-cache as small amount of data as possible.

The result of the test at KTPA/19L was the opposite of what I was expecting- no stutters !  I then did a second flight landing at KDFW/13R- no stutters.  Then I ran a 3rd test taking off from KBOS, flying down the New England coast at 6000' to include clouds and terrain, especially when approaching Manhattan, and landed at KJFK/22L- no stutters.

The important factor in the above results is that I do not have ANY addons installed except for PMDG and Fenix.  These results are exclusively the product of MSFS 2024 SU2.  Each test was a new MSFS 2024 session, i.e., quit to desktop after each test to have as clean an environment as possible.  It appears that this setting should be set to the highest possible value, of course within the constraints of the GPU's VRAM, to have all the required scenery loaded prior to landing.  Why this impacts landing, I don't know.  Any comments on these results are welcome.
