MSFS 2024 - Melted Buildings Syndrome

But if you move too fast or the TLOD and Off Screen Cache settings are too low, then you will get the same melted effect.

No, melted buildings are quite different, visually..

  • PG is as good as your connection speed to the MS servers. Unfortunately a broadband connection is not a guarantee that the download speed from a specific server will be adequate.

  • I turn PG off in 2020 because of Melted Building Syndrome.  I leave PG on in 2024 because there does not seem to be an issue with buildings melting.  All crisp and clear as much as imaginary objects c

  • It is spotty... many places are amazing, others annoyingly ugly.

I'd rather have melted buildings then no Photogrammetry at all, so I keep it on.

For me it's the exact opposite and I like it better this way. I don't think this Programetry will ever work very well, but to each his own...

And I think this is mainly an MS/Asobo server problem !

cheers 😉

If you fly helicopters, turning PG off is not a fix, because most of the helipads that were added in MSFS 2024 are defined based on the underlying PG scenery. With PG off, you end up with helipads that are either buried under an autogen building, floating in the air 100 or 200 feet above the ground (because the PG building that the helipad is supposed to sit atop is gone), or completely non-existent.

IMHO, Asobo needs to improve the prioritization of PG rendering based on distance, so that PG-generated scenery closest to you renders in higher fidelity than PG farther away. That does not appear to be the case right now. We don't need to be able to zoom in with virtual binoculars to see some building 20 miles away being perfectly rendered while flying at 20,000 feet - we just need the stuff closest to us while we are near the ground prioritized. TLOD seems to be a very blunt instrument at the moment.

The foliage that happens to be PG (vs the autogen foliage) is particularly ugly and immersion-killing.

I am eagerly awaiting SU3 to see if this addressed as some of the beta users are reporting.

(Maybe it was already mentioned before)

I had the following issue: my inet speed at router level is 1gb/s. However, I did not realize that my wifi was slow. This slow speed then caused melted buildings. So I fixed it and now testing the inet speed by searching google for speestest and executing it directly in the browser of my FS pc, not trusting the router speed alone.

Glad you got it sorted!

Many people think that their internet is slow when it's the WiFi, and vice versa. They conflate the two completely different technologies.

The diagnosis of any performance issues with streaming applications like FS2024 should involve diagnostics on the local (home) network up to the wall socket. Whatever lies between the socket and the streaming servers is beyond your control, as are the streaming servers...

To be fair, a lot of users do understand how to consider network speed in addition to the quoted service speed from your provider to your router. When you run a speed test from your computer, it typically includes everything in the pipeline including your wifi or LAN. People are still seeing issues even with hard-wired ethernet.

I don't disagree with you. Of course, that would require them to curate the 80,000 procedurally-generated helipads with autogen substitutes, which I am not holding my breath for.

We don't need super-duper accurate duplicates of the buildings or anything (unless you are paying for a bespoke scenery package), just something better than buildings and trees that look like you stumbled into Minecraft by mistake.

In major cities, the autogen is convincing (by which I assume you mean nice-looking) only in areas that are not familiar to the user. In London, Paris, San Francisco, New York, Tokyo, etc., the autogen versions are totally different from the photogrammetry versions which are based on real-world satellite-streamed imagery. This makes it a very subjective issue, since the lack of realism in the absence of photogrammetry bothers some of us more than others. But the difference is real, no doubt about that. In any case, as I've pointed out earlier, one can easily switch pgm on or off during a flight without having to restart the flight, so why is having it on-or-off "all the time" even an issue?

My experience is that "PG Off" completes in a matter of seconds, but when I try to turn "PG On" the system which will just sit and spin for minutes at a time. So for me, if I turn PG off and perhaps want to turn it on again, I have to restart the sim.

This is another example of the endless ways in which systems differ. In my case, it takes no more than 10-15 seconds to switch PG on or off. What you describe does not sound normal, and my guess is that there is a setting that needs correcting in your setup, but I defer to the experts on this.

From my experience it seems to depend where you are when you turn it on.
If you are in the sticks it takes no time, but over a major photogrammetry city and it seems to take longer to load in the PG.
Makes sense I suppose, and will almost certainly depend on internet speed as well.

I wonder if you have data on a slow drive?

I see no difference in loading/unloading time for PG at different locations in the sim -- takes just a few seconds, regardless. You might be right about internet speed being a factor, although mine is not especially fast -- ca. 100-120 mb/s.
