MSFS 2024 - Melted Buildings Syndrome

I still suspect MICROSOFT/ASOBO/MSFS2020/2024 to be the main problem. We'll see.

Me too...

I have 1 Gbps fiber and if I fly normally I don't have the issue, if I hover over an area with PG with the drone at max speed (250), I have the melted buildings too. The DL speed in developer's mode never exceeds 100-150 Mbps in any case and I have no mainthread/GPU spikes, so it's a MS server limitation.

  • PG is as good as your connection speed to the MS servers. Unfortunately a broadband connection is not a guarantee that the download speed from a specific server will be adequate.

  • I turn PG off in 2020 because of Melted Building Syndrome.  I leave PG on in 2024 because there does not seem to be an issue with buildings melting.  All crisp and clear as much as imaginary objects c

  • It is spotty... many places are amazing, others annoyingly ugly.

Same here.. 😉

If I am right (correct me if I'm wrong), photogrammetry is mainly confined to major cities and deals with a very tiny fraction of the earth's land surface. Consequently, for those who fly primarily in rural areas, National parks, etc., and only occasionally visit big cities, it makes no difference whether it's turned on or off. My own usual practice is to keep it on, since most of the time, large metro areas look better -- in fact, a lot better -- with it on. About the only time I ever think about pgm is when the issue comes up in the forums!

Well that sucks, haven't encountered MLS (Melted Lego Syndrome) in a very long time.

It's been a couple years...

I'd rather have melted buildings then no Photogrammetry at all, so I keep it on.

Its like virtual tourism.

We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically.

I am completely the opposite. With PG off, I do not have to worry about melted buildings at all. That is an absolute deal breaker for me.

I suspect in su17 Asobo will remove PG entirely from 2020 and 2024 to standardise server performance and visuals between pc and console versions. Maybe they'll retain a very few hand crafted areas for promotional video purposes and that's all.

I'm basing this prediction on recent and ongoing real life development releases by Asobo /Microsoft not just being flippant.

I doubt it, removing a key feature that sets MSFS apart from other sims would be a total failure. It would be too much even for Asobo.

But doesn't SU3 allow you to download PG?  Which would solve the problem for frequently visited destinations.

In MS2024 there also a few places that use the technology for widespread coverage of nature. Parts of the Swiss and French Alps, Yellowstone National Park, Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Queenstown in NZ, are a few examples.

And it does make a huge difference in the proper definition of terrain, even to highest standard digital elevation model.

I haven't tested the download feature of SU3, I uninstalled FS2024 after build .23 actually.

Even if the feature worked flawlessly (which I doubt), SU3 allows to download packages, not specific cities or PG, and we are talking about several hundred GBytes for a full installation, which would defy the purpose of the "thin client" so much praised by Asobo before launch. And again, I am not sure that the full package downloadable in SU3 includes the PG. Surely it doesn't include the Bing terrain textures, that are estimated in 2-3 PBytes (millions of GBytes).

Will not happen. I expect the opposite : improvements in PG in future updates.

I really don't get where you guys take the idea from that the slow loading of PG LOD's is caused by internet connection issues.

That this is not the case can be easily witnessed when simply downloading one of the many PG Add On packages from Flightsim.to

This sits on your harddrive and therefore there is no streaming in happening. But if you move too fast or the TLOD and Off Screen Cache settings are too low, then you will get the same melted effect.

One thing puzzles me about the debate on photogrammetry. Since it can be switched on or off in a matter of seconds without having to restart anything -- you can interrupt any flight to do it and then resume flying -- why is this issue always framed in terms of "having it on or off"? Just do what you want based on where you're flying and the quality of pgm in that location. Why is this continually rehashed? I honestly don't get it.
