So DX12 was neve an option before as i was on windows 10 still, seems i can now run win 11 so used dx12 and now can fly. Bit annoyed as seems I'm possibly on win 11 without knowing, i was going to wait it out..oh well.... at least I'm flying again so can stop re installing drivers. I assume im on windows 11 how do i find out?

  • YES YES YES!!! 😃👍👍👍😃 FINALLY I got the sim to run again!!! When i rolled back to version 566.36 for the third time IT WORKED!!! Dont ask me how and why, but i got the sim running now!!! Fingers crosse

  • I’d uninstall in NVDA app if you use it.  A few months back this happened to me and it solved the issue immediately.  Sim has flown flawlessly since.

  • So you deleted current driver with DDU and installed 566.36 with no success?  If so a complete reinstall is in your future I suspect.  If not you’re missing a critical troubleshooting step IMO.  Good

Why would DX12 not be an option for Windows 10? I switched to that mode (changed the parameter in the usercfg.opt file) to gain access to the simulator, so I assume that it must be running in DX12 mode??

Well regardless, i always used DX11 now it crashes, use DX12 it loads but noticed it doesn't run aswell and uses much more RAM, quite how suddenly i can't use DX11 beggars belief. You yourself said you had to use dx12 to get it to not crash, but i don't want to run dx12. I've done 894 hours on steam and wanted to get to 1000 for my OCD and then I'd happily wave good bye to 2020..... I'll give it a week see if there is a fix and then uninstall and forget about it.

I checked and i am still on windows 10, so something somewhere means that dx11 for me crashes 2020 now, its stupid, messed about changing drivers and its some mess up in latest windows update or MSFS itself.

Just found this on the main forum, so basically i updated to 580.88, so i believe that is why i now crash if using dx11.... great.

"FYI, If you want to use the latest Nvidia drivers starting from version 580.88, DX12 must be selected in MSFS 2020 settings. With drivers newer than 577.00, there will be CTDs if MSFS is running in DX11 - even without the Nvidia app. If you use driver version 577.00 or older and want to play DX11 in MSFS 2020, the Nvidia app should not be installed.

Here you go. From this very thread

I concur with Noel. Since NVIDIA drivers seem central to the problem here is a proposed solution.  DDU for a clean and complete uninstall of current drivers and replaced with one of the KNOWN and stable driver sets out there, 566.36

DDU

Nvidia 566.36

Good luck and Blue Skies,

BTW  I just went through this whole exercise yesterday when I foolishly upgraded to the latest Game Ready driver of Aug 11.  Total disappointment as it almost immediately failed with the “device failed” error message and full app stop that has plagued NVIDIA drivers as of late.  I am well pleased with the 566.36 set now.

Could be.  From my research 566.36. is the last good driver for 4000 series cards.  I do know they perform better for my 4070ti than various 570/580 drivers I have installed and I too experienced the DX11 crash after a driver update so I rolled back to previous version which wasn’t 566.36 but a later version

YMMV. TANSTAAFL

The performance in DX12 mode is definitely not as good as DX11, so it is rather frustrating. I hope that the root cause of this is quickly identified, because I am having to lower some graphics settings (and that makes me very uncomfortable).

EDIT: For the record, I have used the 566.36 graphics drivers since the start of the year, and yet I am still unable to run MSFS 2020 in DX11 mode since yesterday. Something else is responsible for this issue.

Update on this from me, updated to latest driver as of today and now can load up using DX11, all back to normal, happy again. And DX12 is word not allowed IMO, your experience may vary, but a no from me...

The great irony here is that 2024 is DX12 only.

But I'm guessing it hasn't got (BETA) written after it like 2020 in the options... I don't have 2024 but I'm hoping the got it working better.

Main thing, i can now continue with 2020 when i get the itch to fly.

DX12 BETA mode seems to be working OK at the moment for me. I will have to test it with all of my airport addons, but so far it is workable. That performance optimisation patch for Aerosoft EDDF Frankfurt may just have arrived in the nick of time

It will CTD again. This is a known issue with 2020 and DX 11 use. A clean install will get it working again but upon a restart of sim...CTD
