Dramatic landing of UPS 747 in Taipei.

Featured Replies

A UPS 747-8 freighter from Hong Kong to Taipei made its third attempt to land at Taipei Airport 05L in crosswinds of up to 41 knots. The right wing drooped after touchdown, causing the right outer engine nacelle to contact the ground.

I was never being rude, Enough Said means exactly that  Edit: Also I never said Final Report, I said Preliminary Report

  • Mr. LRBS, I read your "about" and find it very interesting.  Qualified and current in both the B747 and A380 at the same time.  Also you referenced being a Designated Examiner and a Chief Pilot.

Flying in a Typhoon is about as daft as it gets. The angle of that plane relative to the runway when it touched down was ridiculous.

OOF!  😲  I guess the passengers on the port side got a good view down the runway.

It's painful to admit, but it shows reckless behavior, a lack of understanding of personal limitations, and a poor CRM example. So much time and effort were wasted training these people.

Cargo plane "UPS". 😉

I was treating a UPS pilot for a while.  He told me they overwork their pilots every day.  Tough job.

Seeing the video, this is why they tell you to always bring an extra pair of clean underwear along when you travel.

I believe it recalling my days in high school and college working for that outfit at night unloading trucks and sorting. I like to say they reminded me of the slave rowers in the Ben Hur Roman galley scenes. But it was good experience for a young kid in school. It was the early seventies and the supers would run up and down the planks yelling and cussing and calling us names. Supervisors could get away with it back in those days. But the money was good for a school kid, and it was kinda fun. Wouldn’t trade the experience.

From your post it sounds like you were riding on the jump seat?  😕

I give you credit for your proper reporting, you even outdid the Mainstream Media that reported the "Right Wing" touched the ground. You are correct it was the right outer engine nacelle 👍

From what I understand, there was a Typhoon in the area, and this was their third attempt, they were low on fuel and were running out of options. I think you were a wee bit hasty in your comment, and no you were not there

I'm afraid you are not familiar with what is going on with this type of airplane and operation. I will share with you very little information; there is not enough space for us to we can cover this here. Generally, we don't get dispatched into a typhoon area. If they dispatch you in the vicinity, you get properly briefed with many available options, company will constantly update you during flight, you get enough contingency fuel (they might weight restrict on loads to have additional fuel), fuel for hold, for delay, or other forcasted delays, one approach and missed approach, fuel to fly to the alternate airport plus the regulatory requirements. This is not a situation where you ran out of options, unfortunately, just poor decisions, not knowing your limitations, bad CRM that precipitated this incident. Locky, that they are alive.
You say that I'm hasty in my comment? As a DE and CP, they would not get my sign-off. The reason is very simple: I'm not politically correct and will never be. Company and equipment are my last concern. It's the safety of the pilots, passengers, freight, and people on the ground, and to be able to return home alive to your family after a leg or pattern. So yes, unfortunately, this is a perfect example of what not to do.

I will wait for the preliminary report, you are commenting without all the information that is absolutely true, all your muscle flex means nothing

A lot of Monday morning quarterback comments here.

No one knows yet the full circumstances surrounding it.

Ok, I understand that you're not familiar with these kinds of operations, and it's very difficult for you to get it. I came to these "conclusions" based on different reports, WX, airport reports, and being very familiar with these operations. I came to these conclusions based on a very telling video of what not to do.  If in your mind I'm flexing my muscle, I'm afraid you understood nothing.
Of course, when the investigation is over, many things will be different, while others will remain unchanged. Many people commented online (YouTube) and speculated without any knowledge or experience in the airplane. Did you also go after these people and tell them about muscle flex? By any chance, did you look at the wx at that time? Do you know or understand B748 x-wind limitations? Do you know and understand what a stabilized approach is?  Very disappointing, others are OK to make comments, while others are flexing their muscles.
