moaning of a320 and screeching of il76 engines

can someone explain the extremely loud screeching noise of il76 engines, i know bypass ratio plays its part, but why do they sound like as of bricks sliding on concrete! atleast the 732 doesnt. i have seen the trail of that sound on 772 too, from rear. is it the turbine?also many would have observed that the a320 family engines create a loud moaning sound like no other does. earlier i thought it might only be the case with IAE engines but recently i have heard the same on CFM equiped ones too. i am just confused; even the engine cowlings and reverser mechanisms for the two are different. what exactly causes that sound??thanks

I have not got an answer but i know what you mean about the A320 sounds.I think they sound like a giant lawn mower!Dave

There are quite a few factors that create the different noises from a jet engine. Design, number of compressor stages, size, etc. are some of them. If you're talking about the different external noises heard at low altitudes, ie- landing configuration, you are probably hearing the bleed air system used to run things like airconditioners, APU's,etc. APU systems alone can cause up to 75 percent of the engine noise you hear with the engines pulled back to idle.John M

I have heard that sound in landing configuration when its at around 2000ft as well as when cruising at 5000ft circling on approach. even I have heard it when the a320 maintains an altitude just after after takeoff.It probably might be between 80%-55% of full throttle, prominent even when the jet buzzing starts. It is so different that I can close my eyes and bet that its a320, be it CFM or IAE, and that surprises me.Didnt hear that sound when its idle on ground, just a hiss with some high frequency.

I once flew on an IL-62 and sat in the 4th row from the rear.The sound of those four NK84 motors on T/O thrust needs to be heard to be beleived. I really thought I was in one of those Star Wars creations lol, it was awesome :)

Another 'odd' and very distinctive engine note can be found coming from the A-10....We have a bunch of them staying at RAF Lakenheath (UK)for a little while; in from Spangdahlem (Germany). I work at the BX at Lakenheath, and have seen them many times recently whilst taking a quick smoke break; you don't hear them till they're overhead, and then you get the unearthly and constant howl (rather like a distressed vacuum cleaner!); they must be terrifying if you're in an enemy tank...by the time you hear it, it's too late!I was at the viewing area (at the head of RWY 29) this past Monday taking a few photo's of the resident F-15's, and hoping for a bit of A-10 action, when that howl started up faintly, somewhere across the airfield, and then four of 'em came taxiing up to RWY 29, lined up, and off they went, one immediately after the other!What a sound! What a sight! The howl reached a crescendo as each A-10 suddenly lurched into it's take-off run, and the heat wash streaming out from the tail was amazing; then it was gone....silent now, as it climbed fast, banked sharp right and vanished over the Suffolk countryside. As awesome as the noise is, it's only a fraction of the volume of the F-15, but that note is fantastic!When they come back and overfly the base, and make a few fancy aerial manoeuvres, it's almost a creepy experience; that ghostly howl sends shivers up my spine! A very distinctive engine note; not to be missed!Steve.
