nvidia smooth motion for vr

because as of the latest NVidia driver, Pimax "Smart Smoothing" doesn't exist in PimaxPlay anymore. As I said, their software sucks. why would anybody want to use a non-existing 😀 Pimax feature when you can enable NVidia Smooth Motion, which does work flawless.

I'm keen to hear what you have to say on this after your testing...

Still heinous ghosting on glass panels? Smoother?

Thanks for any feedback Fielder

why should it not be working? This is NVidia tech and not Pimax useless stuff. 😀 it's the only FrameGen with great quality we have for VR.  it's day and night difference. 50-60 fps is very smooth, finally I can enjoy VR as much as 2D flying. surprised not every RTX 40/50 user is using it. I can never go back to 30 fps. I am not fussed with brief glass cockpits speed/altitude tape blurries. here some outdated, but still interesting info.

I ran 4 flights EGLC to EGLL. Using Simrate 4 at times to speed up the trip, but slowing down to watch the scenery. I kept under 1000 feet.

Nvidia smooth motion certainly does something in VR. It is not inactive in VR. With my 5800X3D which isn't a good of most as you all's, fps seems to decrease about 6 or 7% with Nvidia SM on. I think because it puts a load on my cpu. There is a certain smoothness increase with SM on. Maybe the drop in fps is because my fps readout can't read fps correctly with SM (OpenXRToolkit fps display). It may actually be faster framerates with SM on, but the number readout is slightly less.

If I lock frame rates with both Max Frame Rate and Dynamic Settings (both at 30), then the fps was identical the whole flight with SM on or off. There seemed to be a certain smoothness with SM on.

I was using DLSS for anti aliasing.

Presets: J and K give best fps, but lots of glass screen ghosting in DLSS anti aliasing.

L gives way less ghosting in DLSS than J or K, but a fairly big drop in fps.

M is in between: Less ghosting than J or K, but more than L. And M gives less fps than J or K, but more fps than L.

With my modest hardware, I use M. With better hardware, L is the way to go because the fps drop is not as serious an issue.

I use the NVidia app built-in frame counter ALT-Z + ALT-R, and it shows twice the fps than without.

When I try Smooth Motion ON,  it crashes MSFS 2024 upon startup. I can't figure out why...as soon as I turn off Smooth Motion, it runs fine.

I am using the Nvidia App to use the Recommended DLSS, which is 310.5.2. The Nvidia app also sets the preset to K.

I'd really like to see how this runs with VR, but it crashes every time I try to use it. I can see you are able to use it, so I'm not sure what I'm missing...

using the latest driver 591.74 ? also you need to have DLSS FrameGen turned OFF in MSFS graphics settings when SMOOTH MOTION is activated. Otherwise I am getting magenta flicker (only on the 2D monitor) when both are active at the same time, but no crashes. I use AMD FSR3 FrameGen instead so I can adjust settings while in 2D menus without that flicker.

"NVIDIA Smooth Motion can be applied to games running at native resolution, with super resolution technologies, or with other scaling techniques, typically doubling the perceived frame rate."

it is not an inherent Nvidia Smooth Motion app issue, you might be running out of your 12 GB VRAM. you could check with some monitoring tools, GPU-Z etc. my 4090 has 24 GB, and still I got a warning twice while Smooth Motion was ON in VR: "resource usage exceeds GPU memory" and immediately got briefly some stutters, which disappeared quickly fortunately.

I knew it. 😀 interesting how it crashed your simulator, when others and myself only get pinkish flicker. I suppose your 5090 GPU got overloaded, (is it overclocked ?) a hardware conflict caused by software nevertheless. Nvidia needs to have a warning in their app when you turn Smooth Motion ON, or should not even allow both settings simultaneously.

Yes, it came this way (I did not overclock it). It is a PNY NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 ARGB Epic-X Overclocked Triple Fan 32GB GDDR7.

Really appreciate your help with this! Turning off FG also solved another minor issue. That is, when starting FS 2024, the startup video was stuttery...turning off FG made it smooth. Not a big problem, of course, but nice to know what caused it.

it doesn't work in VR anyway, so you are not missing anything. in 2D though, I do you FrameGen, but then I don't use 2D except while in flight planning or other configuration menus. NVidia should have made all this clear in their context sensitive HELP or some such, many users have the problem you described and then claim Smooth Motion as such doesn't work, just because the Pimax implementation doesn't do any good.

with 32 GB VRAM at least you should never run into VRAM shortage, but then that's what we thought back then with 16 GB VRAM also.😀

The Dream Air they had for their San Jose, CA demo had a kludged, uncomfortable head strap that was nothing like the final strap.  Other than the DA's very excellent 8K panels, the lack of eye tracking along with pretty much everything else I was hoping to see was very disappointing.

I have a DA SE preordered, though I'm seriously thinking of either dropping the order or upgrading to the full DA.  I can live with the G2's marginal sweet spot and washed out blacks and colors, but it's smoothness is very good running at 45 fps with the Oasis driver.  When running the DA at 45 fps, if every head motion results in a judderfest, even with its vastly superior visuals, I'll probably pass on it completely.  BTW, I did pay extra for their return for any reason with free shipping option.
