Question about TLOD and Scenery Popping

The scenery is so bad in X Plane, how can you tell if things are popping in or not?

The general scenery is bad - no argument there.  However, airports are pretty accurate (building placement, taxiways, windsocks, etc).  Thanks to the scenery gateway system, which I’m still waiting on for MSFS…..

You didn't give it long enough, I told you it needs some time.  I see the same satellite scenery I see in MSFS.

Scenery doesn't pop in, it's the autogen.  MSFS is well known for culling autogen when still close to your position - just read the many threads about it.

Well, until BS like that is sorted out, I will not be touching MSFS 2024.

If my '24 was blurry and popping, do you really think I'd fly it?  Would any of us?

Yes, but why are some users suffering from that? Why would I take the risk if the source of the problem has not been isolated?

The OP runs a 400 TLOD, and then wonders why there's a problem.  There's usually a /reason/ why this vocal, rapidly-shrinking minority has problems.  But do what you wish, we all have free will.

I only tried 400 for a couple of minutes to see what would happen to scenery popping. It’s not what i usually do. My original question was meant to mean why at tlod 400 am i seeing planes and buildings popping in directly below me while still above the airport, shortly after takeoff.

If you’ll notice, i made no effort to report a problem, but rather, came to the forum group to ask a question, so i could learn.

I'm guessing this is memory management in action, trying (and failing) to fit objects from a very large volume into limited memory. It probably prioritizes objects in a cone in the direction of view, so when you look away, whatever you were looking at could be purged from memory almost immediately. Then, when you look back, you will see popping, as objects that were just purged now have to be loaded back into memory.

I may be confused but that sounds like eye tracking, which my Quest 3 doesn't have. Am I understanding this wrong?

Eye tracking? No, the principle should apply regardless of how you move your direction of view around.

Another way to look at it, at TLOD 400 you won't have enough memory to keep everything loaded at the same time, and the objects that get purged may not be the ones you expect (i.e. those in the distance).

"ground textures are blurry" is still in "Progress - SU_04" according to the latest road map for bugs (alongside LOD issues), hopefully they'll get a grip on these issues by then so if you're on the fence wait until SU4 rolls out, hopefully we'll see some fixes in early beta 🤞

I am playing around with settings. I am using Quest 3, Virtual Desktop, and the C172 G1000.

For grins I am starting TLOD at 400. But I am getting all sorts of scenery popping, even close to where I am, not off in the distance.

I certainly thought that with a TLOD of 400 I would not see that.

Thoughts?

offscreen terrain precaching to high or ultra should fix the scenery popping.  There is a bit of a VRAM tradeoff, so be aware.  Has nothing to do with TLOD.  The low res textures are yet to be fixed.  They were supposed to in 2024 when it launched, IRRC, but they are not.

Hey there Rob G! Do you have your settings available? Sim, nvidia etc. Maybe we could help. Not a VR person but at least we could try. What is your off screen terrain precaching? It should be set to ultra for best results. Also, to make sure you don't have dynamic settings checked "on" as that really messes with OLOD and TLOD, buildings etc. Keep your OLOD at least 150 at all times. Keeping your TLOD at 200 should be good enough for most flights but autofps could raise or lower for you in the flight. Try 200 TLOD and OLOD of 200. Dynamic settings off and try without autofps as well.

I have a similar problem i VR.  Especially at dark time. When I fly above a city, I see many distant lights, but in the front there might be a large spot where lights start popping up gradually. As I can remember there was no such issues in 2020
