What to back up when reinstalling MSFS2024?

Here - I tried to match your settings, and have GSX, BATC (traffic 7/10) and payware CYYZ from FLyTampa.

You can see I'm getting 70-100 fps with framegen on (CYYZ and Ifly are both not fully optimized for 2024, I get more fps with the Fenix at Ini EGLL for example). So without framegen, 35-50 fps.

Yes, my CPU is better than yours, but it's nowhere near 2-3x as good.. more like 20% better. And your GPU is better than mine.

Something just isn't right in your system. Have you tried a benchmarking program like 3D Mark?

  • But have you benchmarked your GPU? Cinebench only does the CPU.    try unigene superposition. It’s free.

  • I haven't backed up stuff and have reinstalled a few times in the last year. It has worked out well for me, the settings come back from the cloud. Yes, third party stuff may need to be installed, but

  • Some of the installers uninstall whatever is there first as part of the installation process. I usually just run the installer and let it do it's thing.

Thanks very much, I’d certainly appreciate anything you can share.  I’m still torn between whether I’m chasing a red herring or have an actual issue.  Here’s the previous thread which has lots of screenshots, performance information as well as the suggestions I received.  I started out thinking it was a 5090 issue, but I’m now seeing it’s more a CPU limitation.

I’ll add that I’ve been doing some tweaking since and found in the same initial scenario I posted about below (albeit with clear skies), my FPS was more in the high 20’s.

I remember your thread...that was a month ago!  Are you still fighting that problem?

If it were my simrig after a month of dealing with it, I would format c colon and reinstall /everything/, update BIOS, chipset etc.   You'll be time and aggravation ahead doing that.  I know it's 2025, but even today when you have an OS that's lived through major hardware change(s) as yours has, there's potential for problems.

Thanks, I should say the high 20's in the scenario is without FG, but still certainly lower than yours.  I did a benchmark with Cinebench (CPU multicore) and it came back as expected, I think the score was around 17,000.

Thanks, yup still at it, though not continually for a month.  The weather is still nice here so I've been doing much more golfing than simming.  That's rapidly coming to an end though.

And I think I'm getting close to that point of a windows reinstall, just need a saturday cleared to figure out everything I need to backup and make it happen. I have a lot of games on steam as well, though not on my windows drive so maybe they won't be too much hassle with reinstalling windows.  WHo knows where all the save games are stashed though.

try unigene superposition. It’s free.

That's a CP Air tail in your avatar pic yes?  I always thought that was a right smart livery as the English say.

Weather has been great down here too, like still in the 80's and dry.

Don't worry, after you reinstall and get back up and running, you'll forget all of the hassle.  It should perform sooooo nicely.

It is!  One of the beauties from the past, my favourite livery.

We've had (and are still in) a 50-year drought in Nova Scotia...I've never crammed as much golf into six months as I did this season!  But alas, laet fall is here and it's time to shift to my winter hobby 🙂

Here's someone with a system similar to yours, except they have a 4090. Yours should be faster

Your GPU is fine. It's a software issue with MSFS then. At this point I would be doing a full clean Windows reinstall, BIOS updates.. the whole nine yards. You should get amazing performance with your system.

Thanks.  That’s why I was thinking try a MSFS reinstall first, then failing that go for a full windows reinstall.

Hope that works!  One thing I notice in the other thread, you mention running an XMP profile with your AMD motherboard.  You know AMD boards prefer EXPO memory profiles.  You want to make sure your RAM is fully compatible with your motherboard (ASUS publishes what they call a Qualified Vendor List (QVL) of tested sticks, other motherboard manufacturers do too).  XMP RAM on an AMD board can sometimes work well, but it might not, especially if the sticks aren't on the QVL.   I didn't see anyone mention that in your earlier thread so I thought I would mention it.

I only did a quick glance at your bench results, but from what I could tell your bottom end (min) with your 9800X3D is higher (as expected) than with the 7800X3D, but your top end isn't where it should be, making me think your ram isn't running full-tilt when it's being asked to.

Long thread you linked … I didn’t see any images of Watt usage under load (during flight and/or around your airport)?

There is definitely something going on with FPS that low with Render Scaling only at 100 at FT CYYZ.

Why are you using XMP profiles for AMD CPU, should be EXPO profile (but I don’t believe that is root of your issue).  Really need to see GPU Watt usage under load before I can progress with possible issues.

CPU is a bit weak for that GPU, but I don’t think it would cause that low an FPS.

Rob.

EDIT: you can monitor watt usage via HWINFO64 free version or RTSS with MSI AB (both free).

I'm running Render Scaling @ 200 so 6880 x 2880 which is higher load than 3840 x 2160 @ render scale 100.  My FPS varies from low 30's to low 40's in the above videos.

Curious to see your Wattage.
