I had a similar flight when I had to fly to Philly last year and was so intrigued I looked it up on FlightAware myself as we were in heavy cloud and I wanted to know where we were held. It's been rare I've been on a flight that has to go into a holding pattern given how frequently I fly. More often I've have been put on a "gate delay" for traffic control purposes--used to happen a lot when I flew into JFK from SFO back in the 80's. Since '77, I've only been on three commercial flights that have been placed in holding patterns--Philly last year and two flights into JFK (both for weather related traffic restriction). I've been Gate Delayed numerous times, more than I care to count. Living in Phoenix a dozen years I can tell you a gate delay here in the summer is no fun.-John

" Hey, I found some more poker chips in the bottom of my flight bag. "" Allllright, we're heading back. "" No wait,......####, they're checkers from my kid's checker game. "" Shoot...oh well, back to the Mormon Temple we go to confess our sins. ":D John M

Holding pattern, probably due to weather orpossibly traffic as was said. I have trouble doing them that neatly in the sim free-handing it.I can add that I have only once been in a holding pattern in commercial flying, and it was at ORD if I recall correctly.RhettAMD 3700+ (@2585 mhz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (Guru3D 93.71), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2gb Corsair XMS 3-3-3-8 (1T), WD 150 gig 10000rpm Raptor, WD 250gig 7200rpm SATA2, Seagate 120gb 5400 rpm external HD, CoolerMaster Praetorian

A few years ago I was returning home to San Antonio from somewhere, likely Dallas, on Southwest. Everything was swell until we got near to Austin where we were informed by the pilot that Houston Center was off the air and that he had to stay with Fort Worth and enter a hold until the problem was fixed or someone decided what to do next.So we had a narrated air tour of the sights and landmarks in and around Austin. What could have been 30 minutes of boredom was intersting and fun. When he announced that Houston was transmitting again, there was widespread applause. I was never sure if it was because everyone was happy that they were going to get home or in appreciation of the Captain's tour guide abilities.R-
