FBW A380 - should I upgrade and shift over finally?

Featured Replies

I am deeply surprised by some statements made on this thread regarding performance. I use the FBW A380 regularly (with the cabin) and have yet to experience a situation where the plane does no behave correctly and can't be maneuvered due to a lack of performance. It is fluid and perfectly enjoyable.

System wise, it is what it is, progressing slowly due to its freeware nature, but what is available is already a great product that does not pretend to be completed as yet!

In addition a quick glance at my PC specs below will demonstrate that it is far from being the latest and best shiny hardware! BUT, I have 64 GB of RAM and 24 GB of VRAM (on a 3090 though), incidentally whereas almost everybody list their RAM in their specs, we see very rarely the VRAM of their video card, that should not be neglected when we make comparisons. So I would assume that may explain why some are experiencing difficulties with this plane.

I'm surprised that FBW haven't done any updates for the A380 when compared to when their A320 came out. It had lots of updates, system wise, performance etc. Let's hope they're waiting for SU4 before they will optimize it. I would love to fly the A380, but with my machine (see specs below) it's just not possible right now.

Knowing iniBuilds, I don't expect their A380 to be much better in FPS than the FBW one. And I'm not sure about the "much" part. I hope to be wrong 🙏

I know IniBuilds pretty well and I'm hoping our future products change your thoughts regarding this. 😉
We have in fact learned quite a bit since 350 (which you should be able to see in A340, a product that gets consistent positive feedback regarding performance) and are carrying that knowledge forward.

On the topic of A350, we have a large performance-minded update in the oven right now that should bring a lot of respite to those on lower tier PC's.

I think recently released large aircraft models have become extremely heavy due to issues like overly detailed reproduction, complex animations, and a lack of proper LODs.

I’m on a 7800X3D / 4090 and the FBW runs well at 1440p. This is my performance with TLOD at 200 and OLOD at 120, no AI traffic as I mostly do either just me or VATSIM.

You give great hope to many.... we hope it will be soon :)

I got this from their website - "As a baseline please expect to see a framerate reduction of up to -25% compared to the default A32NX. We are working on improving this in the future as the A380X is in an alpha state and certain aspects of the model or textures may not be fully optimised for performance"

when did they write that ?

Wow....that is a welcome surprise @IniSteve

Although I have a beefy system, I still feel the performance heavyness when I use the 350 in VR. My 9900x3d combined with a 5090rtx and medium settings at DLSS Balanced, is working hard to achieve constantly 45fps (half refresh rate from my Varjo aero).

So a performance tune of 350 will not only be nice for users with low spec PC......;-)

Great decision and a good sign inibuilds sending out with your message above.

Thanks for constantly updating your products and sharing your learning curve with your customers.

When they released the A380 itself, You can still find this on their website if you head to the A380 section. If you are on their discord server - there are further explanations there.

From FBW Discord:

Model Update for the A380X - Oct 2025
Yes. We know it’s November now. We started on the model update in October, so the PR was named “October”.

Among the usual fixes and some background changes to set up the model for future features, we would like to highlight some additions that made it into this A380X model update.

As part of our ongoing effort to optimize the A380X, some minor model optimizations were made to reduce draw calls, and textures that didn’t require large sizes were resized to minimize the impact of the A380X. Don’t expect anything game-changing with this one patch, our goal is to make many small optimizations that add up in the long run. There should be no visual degradation with these changes, so the A380X will stay as beautiful as you remembered it.

Additionally, we have provided a click spot to hide the EFB. As the OIT gains more functionality, some might prefer to hide the EFB for certain phases of flight to have a better view out the window or of the OIT. The click spot is currently in the most convenient spot, but this could change in the future as cockpit lighting gets developed further. We would love to hear your thoughts on this feature. Will you be using it?

You will need to turn on the respective laptops for the FLT OPS functionality on the OITs or “not available” will be displayed on the OIT. The switch on the laptops is indicated in the screenshots.

As always, you can refer to the dev changelog for the full list of changes

I have enjoyed the FBWA380. I have no issues with frames but also I’m using DLSS and Lossless Scaling. I fly with the cabin and I think there was a mod on flightsim.to to get it more condensed. I fully plan on getting the ini A380 as well.
