Opinions on MSFS ‘replay’ systems available for 2024?

Featured Replies

I haven’t done too much research on good replay systems for MSFS 2024.

  1. FCR (built in) - seems limited (aircraft control surfaces not accurate and not smooth) and somewhat bug filled in my short experience with it.
  2. Sky Dolly - have not tried, thoughts?
  3. Flight Echo - have not tried, thoughts?
  4. Flight Control Replay 5 - have not tried, thoughts?

For items 2 thru 4 questions:

  • How well do they capture flight control surfaces movements and lights (flaps, gears, landing lights, strobes, nav, beacon, etc.)?
  • Any issues with using Chaseplane 2024 with them?
  • How is ground and air movement during replay, smooth?

Thoughts?

1. very limited

2. don't think it works in FS2024. Edit: FS.to shows only as compatible with FS2020.

3. never heard of ti

4. FCR5 freezes the PMDG 737 whenever I try to record. Shame as I like the interface.

Well that’s a bummer … wonder what the folks from Aviations Lads use as they seem to have a replay system working well for them?

It is a shame that the built in replay system cannot show all of the correct animations/lights etc. There is zero point in using it if it cannot do that.

I've been using Sky Dolly for the past few flights in MSFS 2024, and it has been working well for me.

Really! Author only claims FS2020 compatibility.

I just wish we had a similar replay system (along with flyby, runway and tower views) built in like we did in P3D.  TBH, when these were omitted from MSFS2020, I assumed it was just an oversight and never thought we’d be here 6 years later still without them.

I wish we had a replay system like IL-2, people make some great movies.

I use the built in FCR program for replaying the external aircraft views to sync with the cockpit views recorded from the flight. I have used all systems except Flight Echo. FCR is the best for my purposes.

You will find some aircraft replay to perfection in external view (re control surface movement, lights, landing gear) and others miss the correct control surface movement or light function in the replay. I also found this to be the case for SkyDolly.

So, it is not the program so much, but the airplane being recorded.

Absolutely agree, it is fantastic.  As is the built in Fly-By view, another thing IL2 got right from the start!!

Back in FS2004 and FSX there was a great tool called Flight Recorder that allowed playing your recorded flights back as AI aircraft.  It made a great way to create formation flights to fly alongside with.  Different approach from Airshow Assistant.

Thanks for the input, I might give FCR5 a go as the developer seems to be keeping it updated and does have specific aircraft support (but currently not the PMDG 737).  Also seems the developer of FCR5 is the same person (and similar software) that Microsoft released as FCR for 2024.  Primary difference being that FCR5 supports more platforms and has additional enhancements not in the “embedded” FCR for MSFS 2024.

The developer (Fabio Merlo) seems like good dev and committed … hopefully he doesn’t fall victim to Microsoft’s SDK/API decisions and can progress the product further.

A good replay tool can be very effective at seeing what I did right or wrong in addition to being a great way to captures one’s flight adventures.  All of the flight sim platforms seemed to struggle to work with complex aircraft and required aircraft specific support to show animations correctly.

Is weather also being captured?

It is bewildering to me that Asobo wouldn't just opt for the full spec version of FCR. As it stands its hardly any better than the default replay tool.

I don't get the business decision behind that except for maybe to support small flight sim devs but provide no tangible benefit to it's users?

For now I just use FlightRecorder, which works good enough in most of the planes I fly, it's dead simple and I don't ever save my recordings so good enough for my needs.. I've pretty much accepted we won't get a native replay tool that actually records are lvars and animations in a useful manner. It's one thing xplane does well imo

I don’t know all the SDK details, but if the event messages that one can subscribe via the SDK is similar to how (PollyPot) the GoFlight Interface Tool (GIT) worked, those more complex aircraft may or may not provide anything to subscribe to so a replay system couldn’t capture the events … OR may be able to capture the events but doesn’t know what to do with them on playback.

I know PMDG had issues with making events public hence GIT wouldn’t display them in its inspector section (Steve M. might want to chime in here).

When working with Captain Sim CS 777 in P3D the events were often obfuscated in some single special event that had specific meaning to what the value actually was … very difficult to figure out.

Keven M. (ChasePlane) also found it very difficult to work with complex aircraft events and I believe eventually gave up and focused on higher priority tasks.

I think the basic problem is how do you map a complex aircraft event (or series of events) where there is no equivalent in MSFS.  The aircraft vendor/dev would have to go out of their way to map to generic events the replay system could work with but some accuracy would still be lost.

I do have sympathy for any dev taking on this task as they would have to do A LOT of work to figure out just for one complex aircraft and sometimes it would require inside knowledge and open communications with the aircraft vendor (MJC Q400 is another good case in point).

I’m also going to guess this is why MS/Asobo haven’t really taken the task to heart.

It works for me - I use it to record every landing in FS2024.

Which aircraft? I miss watching my long landings.
