I'm very interrested by this aircraft in the future.

I hold the purchase many time because I read many critics about the quality.

How it is now since the upgrade patch? Do you guys recommand it?

Thanks

I would recommend it before the patch but this patch essentially resolves all the issues I had with it.

I especially liked on the stream during the Q&A I requested specific things and the dev said they'd look into it. Then here I see those specific requests in the changelog.

One of the best Airliner Add ( older Style ) we could get - IMO ! 👍

cheers 😉

Recommend fully, getting better and better

I fly it in preference to the PMDG 737's. Grittier, old school.

Other than the fact that it's ground services come with no stair vehicles (so you must always use a gate jetway) I love the MD-11.   Although my approaches are appalling!  Once the AP is off, it is so difficult to keep it on the LOC and GS. Power changes have a huge delay, followed by a huge change in pitch (severe ballooning or diving) and I keep fighting the aircraft down onto the ground.

I know the MD-11 was notoriously 'not-naturally-stable' but it does feel very wallowy and super slow to react to any control surface or power changes. I thought LSAS was suppsed to make it feel like a conventional jet on approach.

I've personally gotten around this frustration be leaving the AP in until 200' 😄  The flare and touchdown is perfect and easy.  It's just the ILS tracking from 1000' or so that is a real challenge.

When will they make the touch effect on the RWY?

Old school?

I would say that in plenty of areas, the MD-11 automation exceeds  the 737NG  (which is understandable due to commonality requirement)

Not sure conventional is the right word for it. But as you alluded to, It's there to reduce unwanted pitch oscillations.

AFAIK, LSAS is attitude biased, not energy. So even if you bleed off speed, attitude will be maintained (or at least that is the object it will try to achieve) via elevator commands primarily, and with auto pitch trim to ensure elevators always have 5 degree authority.
LSAS will lose authority when >2lbs of force is applied on the control column, and I know TFDI had issues with this modelling in earlier versions.

On my end, I think it flies very stable and precise, much better than at release.

The MD-11 logic and MCDU is much closer to an Airbus than a Boeing.

System: i7-10700K, 32GB RAM, RTX4070 12GB, 1 x 1TB SSD, 2 x 2TB SSD, 1x 2TB HDD, Win10 64bit Home, Meta Quest 3

The second point in the list is the most important one.

This one is next on the purchase list. I just need to get up to speed on the 777F first.

Yeah, with the MD11 and the DC10, you have to anticipate and stay ahead of the jet. For speed changes, we used two techniques in the DC10.

  1. 10% of gross weight + 23 for approach. So for 400K lbs, 40+23 = 63% N1 on a 3.0 slope flaps 35. This puts you very close to approach speed with minor adjustments.
  2. Throttle Knob widths for speed changes. From the front to the back of a throttle head is the knob width. So you make changes that way based on the rate of speed change. If your approach speed is slowly decaying, you move all three half a knob width forward and wait. If the rate is a little faster than slowly decaying, you will use a full knob width on all three. So, you get the point. One last thing for the knob width technique is to take half of that input out once the jet has corrected. If you used a full knob width to correct, once back at speed, take half back out. The knob width technique keeps you from yo yoing the throttles with the slow reactance to thrust changes. The heavier she is, the less reactive she is. You perfect this technique during air refueling in the KC10.

With those speed techniques, keep in mind these jets behave as three different types of aircraft over the weight ranges. The heavy, middle weight and light weight. For example, at heavier landing weights, you pull power earlier because of the slow reactance. When landing at light weights, you keep that power in longer because if you pull it early, it will slow quickly and drop into the runway. I'll give that technique later.

For control inputs, just remember to use small inputs. You have to anticipate and recognize trends early. So as soon as you see you are getting high or low, make a small correction then. Being ahead and atop of those things will keep you stable and you won't have PIO and get pitchy. You don't have to be aggressive, just make that small input and let her gently correct back while visualizing where she will be once corrected. Gentle corrections leads to gentle captures.

You appear to have nailed the landings😁. The technique I mentioned for landing, we used in the DC10. We used 10% of our gross weight for flaring. So, 400K lbs = flare starting at 40ft with a gentle power pull. This technique saves you in those three landing weight tiers you will see. You will notice the heavier you are, the earlier the flare starts and the lighter you are, the later the flare starts. That and a gentle power pull will put you down 1200 to 1300 ft down the runway.
