I use a 32 inch monitor and sit about 90 cm away from it. What's comfortable for me is to set zoom to 58 and then move camera around to adjust height. Once happy with position, I hit ctrl-alt-1 and then that view is saved. If you want to go back to that view after panning, just hit alt-1. Again, zoom of 58 is good for me.
