Recommended Posts

Whoops! :-)As an ex-zoomy, I know full well "stuff happens", but this is some big stuff!bthttp://www.thetowntalk.com/apps/pbcs.dll/a...NEWS01/70904040A B-52 bomber mistakenly loaded with five nuclear warheads flew from Minot Air Force Base, N.D, to Barksdale Air Force Base, La., on Aug. 30, resulting in an Air Force-wide investigation, according to three officers who asked not to be identified because they were not authorized to discuss the incident. The B-52 was loaded with Advanced Cruise Missiles, part of a Defense Department effort to decommission 400 of the ACMs. But the nuclear warheads should have been removed at Minot before being transported to Barksdale, the officers said. The missiles were mounted onto the pylons of the bomber

If you read the bio on the base commander,He was being groomed for something big. Now it's all down the toilet for him,A shame really. Being on a carrier at sea with nukes,I can attest to the seriousness of the whole handling and control process.

I'm kind of surprised that even if they had been de-warheaded that they would transport them on the wing stations of a bomber, and not through logistics channels. Guess the AF must do things different.scott s..

Just a guess, but since this type of cruise missile is designed to be carrried on the wing it is probably the safest way to transport them.John M

Yeah, but not with the warhead in it. It's also a violation of international treaty.

On CNN now - not only four officers relieved of command - but a total of 70 people disciplined - including most of the group which handled the weapons in Minot. The airmen were 'decertified' from special weapons because of replacing detailed Air Force procedures with some informal procedures devised locally.
