MSFS2024 on sale again...Time to switch from 2020?

I've been using it since day 2

Hey Ryan are you getting the CTD when exiting VR?

I got a 30 day trial of Game Pass when I bought a joystick so I installed 2024. Better in every way, including performance! But every time I fly in VR, when I control-tab to get out FS crashes. When I fly in VR I like to taxi and climb out in VR, then to 2D for the cross-country portion (save my eyes) then descend and land in VR. I can’t do that, as 24 crashes every time (never able to exit.) It’s a well-documented issue and there are recommendations (windowed mode, exit to main menu first) but none work for me. I knew you had the G2 like I do and wanted to check your experience. It’s the only thing stopping me from permanently moving to 2024.

Thanks!

I think your analysis has already answered your question. Stay with 2020. I would never buy a new product because it's on sale when I'm happy with the "old" one, which isn't that old after all. T

I don't see myself needing the switch for this very reason. I turn on my PC and get consistent performance every time, and have been for over 3 years now. After years of chasing the "the perfect FPS"

Hey Eddie.  I haven't flown VR in a few weeks.  I am in SU5 beta as well.  But it didn't end in a crash.  But I'm also not using that new driver.  I actually disabled that Windows update from bricking my G2 instead.

20% off on Steam until April 30th

Really waffling over picking it up now or waiting for the Summer Sale. MSFS2020 is very stable and runs very well; I see tons of threads about issues with 2024 not running well for everyone, even really high end PCs still having issues, needing to lock 30fps etc. Career mode is still buggy by many reports, while also being vastly improved according to other reports.

I'm sure 2024 will run on my system - I'm just not sure it will run well enough to justify the switch. I'm not finished with or bored by 2020 by any means; I have Neofly for career stuff, and I'm still learning the GA ropes, haven't even touched airliners or helicopters or fighter jets yet. Will cross the 80 hour mark on 2020 this weekend. Initially I was thinking about waiting until I absolutely ran out of planes to fly and things to do, since I know you get more in 2024 (blimps, hot air balloons, the crane helicopter etc)

On the flip side, 2024 is the future - most new mods and content are being released with that in mind. It objectively does look better than 2020, in the screenshots and videos I've seen. Bush-flying especially.

I don't want to get technical, this isn't a 'will my PC run it' thread. I'm curious how many people are still using 2020 over 2024 and why. If you switched to 2024, what made you finally switch? If you refuse to switch yet, what's holding you back?

I still have 2020 installed “just in case”.

I haven’t felt the slightest inclination to fly it since switching to v2024. 🤙

Thank you. Could be anything I guess. AMD card, WMR, OpenXR. Just really frustrating. Maybe SU5 will fix it.

Well, I might byte it, have it on Steam too, and that way seriously considering a Linux port because it runs ok in Linux, with most of the addons...

Bummer! Then I wouldn't be able to run Aces of Thunder 😕

Anyway, it's a nice oportunity to start a  fresh install of MSFS 2024 🙂

I don't see myself needing the switch for this very reason. I turn on my PC and get consistent performance every time, and have been for over 3 years now. After years of chasing the "the perfect FPS" threads I now have memorable experiences every time I fly. No point risking that. The vast majority are enjoying both sims and long may it continue.

If you're enjoying 2020 then carry on, who knows in a future sale you maybe tempted by an even more reduced offer.

I still have not figured out how to move my community folder - it is on my C drive (windows installation) not my sim drive.  That is ...unfortunate... since is getting big fast-

what? piece of cake. I have used the Xbox app for pc just for this.

I’m extremely excited about/for PMDG 747 so I took advantage of the sale and bought FS2024.  I will make the switch when is close to 747 release.

Ive never been able to switch back & forth between sims (don’t know why) so I’m jumping in with both feet.

Just to clear up any possible misunderstandings - meaning those who are playing 2020 are having a good time and those playing 2024 are too! 😉
