Tweaking an aircraft....

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to tweak the B307 Stratoliner a bit, to go along with the new "fantasy" panel I'm making for it... (First tweak)2 questions....Is it possible to change the prop rpm while the starter is cranking, without affecting the regular idle rpm? Looks like the prop is at full idle....And, is it possible to extend the time spent holding the starter to start the engine? Just seems to start too quickly right now for me..... :)If so, how might I do it? :)Please? :)

Go to the 307's aircraft CFG file and in the [piston_engine] section look for this entry:normalized_starter_torque=the default value for this entry for the C-172 is 0.3, lower numbers here mean increased starting time. To give you an idea of what a lower value for starter torque will do, at 0.3 the C-172 will turn over and start in about 3 seconds. But, if you lower the starter torque value to 0.05 it will take about 8 seconds of cranking time for the engine to start and run at idle. The high cranking rpm you mention is also related to higher starter torque, at the lower starter torque values the rpm is initially much lower, and it takes longer to build up. [piston_engine]power_scalar=1.0 cylinder_displacement=90.0 compression_ratio=8.5 number_of_cylinders=4 max_rated_rpm=2700 max_rated_hp=180 fuel_metering_type=0 cooling_type=0 normalized_starter_torque=0.3 <------ lower this number I have no idea how long the real 307 would take to light off, but it used an earlier version of the same Wright Cyclone radials that powered the B-17, and according to Frank Tallman in his book "Flying The Old Planes" the B-17 requires about 12 seconds to spin up the inertial starter before you hit the mesh switch and the engine begins to turn. So about 14 seconds total starting time if the engine is in a reciprocating mood.

Thanks.0.008 seems to be not too bad for starting time, might try going up to 0.012-0.015 though... :)So, since there's no specific B307 sound package available (that I can find), it's safe to assume that a B-17 sound set would be similar? The default sounds sound too baron-ish, so right now I've got a DC3 sound set configured & tweaked.
