I'm wondering if there is any way other than the Pen tool to paint curved lines.

Try using the circular marquee or shape tool and getting rid of the bits you don't need. Once you have the shape you can select the outline (CTRL-click the layer) and stroke it onto a new layer. I find the pen tool pretty hard to get to grips with
