problems with Mirror parts in GMAX

Recommended Posts

Hi,After adding the Mirror Modifier to an object in GMAX it sometimes appears on a 45* angle. This does not always happen when i add the Mirror part, but when it does i find it impossible to re-align the object!I've tried moving the pivot point and align to world, align to object, but it doesn't help. Also, sometimes when i'm adjusting (rotating) an objects pivot point, the object moves along with it (and yes, i have selected "Affect Pivot Only"). Does this happen to any one else ?? or am i accidentaly pressing something that i should be pressing ??Thankshttp://homepages.ihug.com.au/~elche/Genera...a_fl_md_wht.gif http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~elche/Genera...a_fl_md_wht.gifDiego CoslovichWebsite: http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~elche/index.htm (under construction)E-mail: elche@ihug.com.au

You might try making sure that the axis is aligned to the world. Having a local or view alignment can result in unpredictable mirroring if you're not trying to align to local coordinates intentionally. The only thing I can think of that would move the object(s) when affect pivot point only is selected, would be if the part has animation keys applied and you are not on frame 0. But from your description it doesn't really sound like that's your problem?--Jon

Jon,Thank you for your quick reply.I have tried aligning the axis to the world, but it doesn't work, the object moves with it too. The object has no animation either. I've just tried to move the pivot only (rotate on the z axis) and not only does the object rotate, but it also gets distorted.http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~elche/Genera...a_fl_md_wht.gif http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~elche/Genera...a_fl_md_wht.gifDiego CoslovichWebsite: http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~elche/index.htm (under construction)E-mail: elche@ihug.com.au

Diego, have you tried moving the pivot point while the system is set to "Local" (top bar dropdown list)???I've had an occasional problem with FUBARed pivots that I've only been able to solve by creating a tiny box, aligning the pivot point, then attaching the 'problem part' to the box.I then can simply delete the geometry of the tiny box.I can find NO information in the "Help(less)" files that addresses this issue, or possibly I'm just to dense to understand it... :)

G'Day Bill,I tried almost everything that I could think of (even the three pivot point position options from the drop down menu) but nothing worked until i tried attaching a box to my object like you suggested, and it worked like a charm! :)excellent!!http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~elche/Genera...a_fl_md_wht.gif http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~elche/Genera...a_fl_md_wht.gifDiego CoslovichWebsite: http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~elche/index.htm (under construction)E-mail: elche@ihug.com.au
