Cylnder Head Temperature

Recommended Posts

Is it possible to get the cylinder head temperature of individual cylinders?Does that even make sense? An IO-540 has 6 cylinders and 2 cylinder heads. Is it measuring the cylinder head temperature, or the temperature of the head above each cylinder?I see the variable RECIP ENG CYLINDER HEAD TEMPERATURE:index, but I assume index means engine, not the cylinder index. What's the difference between ENG CYLINDER HEAD TEMPERATURE:index and RECIP ENG CYLINDER HEAD TEMPERATURE:index besides the default units? Is one the old one and one the new one? Thanks!Thomas[a href=http://www.flyingscool.com] http://www.flyingscool.com/images/Signature.jpg [/a]I like using VC's :-)N15802 KASH '73 Piper Cherokee Challenger 180

The two variables are the same... the RECIP... is the "old" variable name. There is only one temp per engine.I typically will use scalars on the value to "fake" individual cylinders... :-walksmile

Thanks Bill.Too bad it's a single value for the engine. I found this interesting comment showing how important it could be for emergency modeling that having individual cylinder temps can be:From http://philip.greenspun.com/flying/diamond-da40 -"We did appreciate the VM1000's individual temperature readouts when the engine was running rough on climb-out one evening from Bar Harbor, Maine. The bar graphs showed that cylinder 3 was cooler than the other cylinders but its exhaust gas was hotter. We conjectured that one of the spark plugs in that cylinder wasn't firing, leading to less combustion in the cylinder (lower CHT) and delayed combustion as the air-fuel mixture was leaving the exhaust valve (higher EGT). As we circled the field we confirmed this hypothesis by running the engine on just the left mag (smoother and the VM1000 bar graphs evened out) and the right mag (rougher and the VM1000 bar graphs showed cylinder 3 further out of line with the others). We aborted our planned return to Boston, grounded ourselves in the local Holiday Inn, and the next morning a mechanic at Acadia Air found a bad plug in cylinder number 3, just as the VM1000 was suggesting."Maybe FS12 or 13.Thomas[a href=http://www.flyingscool.com] http://www.flyingscool.com/images/Signature.jpg [/a]I like using VC's :-)N15802 KASH '73 Piper Cherokee Challenger 180
