DHL looks to be a goner

FAZ in Germany reporting that Deutsche Post will slash 40,000 jobs in the US. There's only one DP operation of that size in the US that I know of.Stick a fork in DHL. They're done. Man, seems like everyone's going under. Being from central Ohio, it's especially tough, as DHL has their main sorting center--operated by ABX Air--in Wilmington. DHL had already said that they wouldn't renew ABX's contract, but this news is pretty much the (bitter) icing on the cake.

Although you never want to see folks go out of work, good riddance to that company. I cannot tell you how many packages sent to me at work through DHL arrived to us mangled, torn apart, and otherwise bashed. Not to mention their local drivers around here have more of in interest in winning a Gran Prix versus safety. Even the USPS has taken far better care of my shipments than DHL. They are far outshined by FedEx and UPS in these parts, by all measures. I cannot help but think this is in part due to why they may be pulling out of the US. Their loud 727 departures from the local airport won't be sorely missed either. Oh well - I hope the displaced workers find other arrangements should this come to pass.-Greg

Even in Germany, where they come from, they do not such a good job at all! I prefere UPS! A thought...Generally, in most markets and industries there are two prominent leaders, sometimes three. For example CocaCola/Pepsi; WalMart/Target; FedEx/UPS/USPS; Kellogs/Post and, sick as they are, America's GM/Ford. So, why, why would DHL come into this market:-hmmm--Roger

I just delt with the DHL in Toronto, CANADA and their customer service is second to nobody.JimCYWG

I used to control in a tower that had "Night Cargo" aircraft based out of there. This was a small DHL sub-division so I was told. Those guys where superb pilots and always were professional. Even though they did have a Snoopy Cartoon painted on the side of their Shorts/Sherpa. They stopped running out of there about 2 years ago...was told it was cost cutting time! Guess now the whole deal is getting cost cut!

DHL is out of Spokane in mid January and we (UPS) have apparently be fighting against FedEx for their customers in the region, which has made things a little stressful on us as the higher-ups are trying to get perfection out of us. As for the noise comment, I can say that their DC-9s aren't any quieter. It's by far the loudest plane we see at the airport, nearly on par to the occasional F-15s from Fairchild.

Again, I will not miss the company (for reasons already stated), but this case is kind of analagous to the current state of GM and Chrysler: the company may not be the best, but it just rips at your heart to see thousands of people losing their jobs at once. Especially when you're from "home base" (Ohio in my case, Detroit in the autos' case).I will, by no means, miss the 727s, though :(
