What is the air file?

Would someone explain to a rookie what the air file is and does. How is it related to the aircraft.cfg file?

In the same folder that the aircraft.cfg is located... ;)The aircraft.cfg is (mostly) scalars for the same data that's specified in the .air file.

Is the air file created from and by the cfg file? Does the air file determine flight parameters which I thought were from the cfg file?
