More GMAX.........

Recommended Posts

Well I have more questions. I have been making adjustments to my project and have used a tutorial on "toprob's" site. I have used the line/spline to make the outline and will use the mesh edit to raise the height of the terminal. Man this terminal has all kinds of right angles. :dohDo I need to make a upper/passenger level and lower/ramp service level for texture reasons? How is the best way for me to put the textures to the terminal? Here is a photo of the south side of the terminal. http://ftp.avsim.com/dcforum/User_files/3ccde0163ab5dcff.jpghttp://ftp.avsim.com/dcforum/User_files/3cc2f79359ef55e8.jpg-Jay....:-wave-NWA Line Maintenance KDFW

Nope just ues the slice tool to divide the polly(s) that you want to mapp your textures to or if your textures are good enough you canuse the mapper and gizmo and size the texture accordingly Oh thislittle gem of a building really has some wierd angles I only wishthey were 90 degrees!

Jay,I would prefer to keep the front side of the terminal one level only and work more on the texture itself. The logic is very simple, keep the number of polygons and the number of textures as low as possible to improve fluidity and smoothness of the sim.For better realism, I would use a photoreal texture which may very well based on the photo you show above. Photos have all natural shadings and lightings so they give a realistic depth which is hard to be created by us, mortals. Crop the part of the photo which is most representative for the whole front side and rework it in your photoshop (or any other paint program).regards,Biber

Hi Biber love what you did for LTBA and yup you are right an keepingit simple and to go "photo real" but as you know that can be hard todo the number of photos need to do our "little" Thunder Bay scenerywas several hundred of that number 50 or so passed grade to be useable as textures and we have full acess to any part of the airport. But like you say with the right textures it's amazeing whatone can do. That's why I said that if your photos are "good enough"one should not have to divide poll'y as long as one got the geometryclose in the first place and then ones textures should map withouta lot of messing around. I know that I enjoy doing meshes and playing around in photo shop and am constantly amazed at what is done with a bunch of numbers simply amazied.http://members.rogers.com/klasik2/danlogo.gifhttp://members.rogers.com/eelvish/flyurl.gif

Wow Dan, that looks great. All your scenery shots you post are beautiful.Did you make this in, I guess you can say pieces or all one? I am having difficulty with the concourse and main terminal as one. Should I do it in pieces and then put it together upon completion? I used a imported drawing I did of the whole KDAL facilities and used the line tool and mesh edit. Major learn curve again, seem to be on it quite a bit lately. Must be that big Birthday I had yesterday. Over the hill. :-lolhttp://ftp.avsim.com/dcforum/User_files/3cc2f79359ef55e8.jpg-Jay....:-wave-NWA Line Maintenance KDFW

Thanks for the comments Jay! Now as for my models they are mostlydone from one extruded spline I.E I draw what I need then I extrudethe spline If you work at Detroit Metro try to get some pics of say the new terminal from the airside ( with out getting busted of course!!) and then use those pictures to "draw" your terminal with splines. As for the roof on the above model I deleted the top polly'sand then just made a box (again from an extruded spline) placed oneside on the peak of each gable and then pulled down on the pollyon the oposeing side so that the "box" that is the "roof" lies at thecorrect angle to the main part of the roof line of the building. Hope this is of some help.http://members.rogers.com/klasik2/danlogo.gifhttp://members.rogers.com/eelvish/flyurl.gif

I work at Dallas-Ft. Worth Intl. Airport, I use to work at Detroit. I do have some great photos of the Detroits new terminal and Dallas's major airports. I have forwarded DTW photos to Shez, he doing a update, and DFW a new offering a ways out. We will try to release at the same time. My project is Dallas Love Field, Southwest's home and big hub. It used to be the big airport of Dallas some 26 years ago. It is my first big effort and I can feel it. :-lolWow sorry so long winded, hope all made since. Thanks for all the help, now and future.http://ftp.avsim.com/dcforum/User_files/3cc2f79359ef55e8.jpg-Jay....:-wave-NWA Line Maintenance KDFW

JayWhen you get time, explain the texture part of gmax. With NOVA & EOD, it's a simple matter to select an object side and assign a texture. With gmax I feel the program has a mind of its own. I've read the posts with the 'planar map' comments but the result is a face containing the whole texture map. How's that 3DMax book you got? Maybe I should get a copy.CD( KBUR, KLAX & LA Aerial views) in the mail Today or tomorrow) :-)

Have you already read the tutorials that come with GMax? You don't need to read all of them, but the basics of working with the program are explained there. For applying a texture the basic steps are:1) Make a new material that has the texture you want to use2) Apply it to an object or to a part of the object3) Change the way the texture is displayed. Here you have basically two options:1) You can change the UVW map, this way you can repeat one texture a several time on a certain object (or part of it)2) You can use unwrap UVW and planar map and then assign a certain part of the texture to a plane of the object. This are the basics. At the moment we (Netherlands 2000 Team) are collecting some tips and tricks for GMax, which will be placed on the internet later.ArnoMember NL2000 Teamhttp://home.wanadoo.nl/arno.gerretsen

I got as far as step 3!I get the window that displays the bitmap, but the white borders with the tiny squares are laid out like a spiders web and some of them up and above the bitmap. Someone mentioned that the squares should be red!

Yes, you can select each of the planes you have unwrapped and then the points belonging to this polygon will turn red.ArnoMember NL2000 Teamhttp://home.wanadoo.nl/arno.gerretsen

Hi Ihor sounds like you and several people need a lesson on how a program like gmax3DS Max handles texturing many "real" read commercial programs are similar if you are interested maybe I could walk you through what "real" mapping is all about I know 3ds MaxGmax fairly well there is a lot to mapping other than just sticking the texture on a face ,polly, element or complete mesh in fact ther are many ways to mapp depending on the shape of an objectthe type of texture the number of textures etc get my drift planarbeing only one of 'em so if enough people are interested we could set something up. Please post if interested I would be glad to helpyou and some others if enough people show an interest. http://members.rogers.com/klasik2/danlogo.gifhttp://members.rogers.com/eelvish/flyurl.gif

Yes Dan, Pleeeeease do.:-) I am always looking for gmax help and fsds pro too. Being sooooo new to scenery design it hurts.:-lolI sometimes have to stop and leave it for a while, due to frustration. btw, how is yours coming along? Maybe post a new pic for inspiration?-EDIT- Oh, forgot to ask, anyone dare to estmate the height of the terminal at the first? I have used several B737 and way different height results. Shorter with some and taller with others. http://ftp.avsim.com/dcforum/User_files/3cd2fb923e5fd384.jpg-Jay....:-yellow1-NWA Line Maintenance KDFW -WORLDWIDE RELIABILITY

Hi Jay our scenery is comming along fine now if you could get me a few pics of KDAL and yup I have flown in there a fair amount of timesin the past (I used to live in White Settelment south west of F.Wa while back BTW) I may be able to help you with the hight of the terminal and maybe get you started on the model from what I rememberit's mostly a box thingy. Now as for setting something up re Gmax andtexturing lets see how many people are interested and I can go from there. My "problem" lies mostly with how Microsoft gives very (none basicly) on their exporter the "SDK" is a joke it's NOT an SDK just abadly done how to use make .mdl exe. By the way do NOT use the newmake .mdl exe it's got big time prodlems as well.http://members.rogers.com/klasik2/danlogo.gifhttp://members.rogers.com/eelvish/flyurl.gif
