Is there a way to increase the distance that my taxiway

Recommended Posts

Hi all I am woundering how to increse the draw distance of my taxiwaysign textures that I've modeled in gmax since I can't get at the .bgls properly. The objects draw fine it's just that the textures"disapear" far to soon and while ok during the day the above problemsucks at night(I.E. far more obvious). So in other words as a short term fix is there some setting I do not know about?. Sorry but the new "make mdl sdk" if one can call it that is no help.http://members.rogers.com/klasik2/danlogo.gifhttp://members.rogers.com/eelvish/flyurl.gif

dan, select the taxiway signs in your gmax scene and export them separately so than you can adjust the visibility settings independent from the rest of the objects.I agree with your comments about the sdk. It's not a sdk afterall but a late and insufficient "readme" on makemdl plug-in.Biber

Yup been doing just that and still the textures disapear even whensetting the draw distance to 50000 meters. It's not the oject (mesh)that dissapears just the texture. My signs are to the exact size (I.E.) not the bilboard sized ones that many people have and that'sone reason why I have hand made all my signs(besides the look like you can touch'em and they are still low polly) I think that the aboveproblem is however due to the size of my signs so there must be (I hope) a fix somewhere in the output .bgl that one could modify. But alas one does not as of yet anyway have acess to that due to no info on the new .bgls that the exporter puts out and as discreet closely guards the gmax code( they charge huge bucks for the privlidge) my only hope is that some one who is a code head and not a dumb pilotwannabe modeler can figure out how to set pixelsize anddraw distance. As I will not put anything into my scenery unless it's as "real as it gets" and to me signs are a big part of the airport's look and feel. I know that's somewhat anal but I am trying to model reality not fantacy here. (I do enjoy modeling for Quake BTW) but this isn't Quake. Plus Id's support is great rather like someone else we know LOL. Did you make the taxiway signs for you scenry BTW? Thanks for all you do for us all. yep,I made them using gmax, they are all one sided planes. There were many , I grouped them into three and used three sets of crammed textures (with night textures as well). As far as I remember I set the distance to 2000 meters or something.Should confess that it took many hours to build them and preparing the textures, big pain in the err.. fingers.Biber

Well my models for this airport are 3D models as there are only about40 with three crams. I know at a larger airport I may not be able touse 3D signs Biber (see my pic below for the scale of the signs) yours seem to be larger but I wanted to get the scale right on. Tellme if you think that's the problem. and do you remember the size of your signs?.A somewhat confused Dan http://members.rogers.com/klasik2/danlogo.gifhttp://members.rogers.com/eelvish/flyurl.gif

Hi Dan,my signs were not ultra-realistic in dimension. It was more a "that looks about right" sizing, to confess...What I did was to make sure that they are visible and legible from the cockpit of a taxiing 737 or a 767....Biber

looks good Dan,do not have a clue though why a texture should disappear from a distance...I doubt that it is a gmax problem.hopefully scasm experts jump in with solutions....Biber

Hi Dan,What kind of texture did you apply on the signs? Have you added the mip maps to it?PS. Just saw the other discussion about this subject :), so don't mind my idea as it is already mentioned there.ArnoMember NL2000 Teamhttp://home.wanadoo.nl/arno.gerretsen

yes if you mean extended bit maps and you know the strange thing theproblem is less severe with plain old .bmps yup bit mapps go figure!Jim and I have been scratching our heads over this one is seems thatonce an object is a certain size the problem is much less severe seemy other post showing both a "common size" sign and a larger one from gmax that I can see the texture on from the other side of the airport aprox 2500m. like I said(in the other post) all my signs are the same hight and width and only differ in length. I have even tried setting the "view distance" in the export window to as far as 50000m still no luck and no sorry I can't stand over sized 2d signs LOL. Like I said I maybe anal on this but at least as far as ansim goes I am simulating what is real. I would hate to have to usethe old tools to do my signs with all there frame rate problems and such I would rather model not program LOL Thanks for any info you can give a dumb pilot.http://members.rogers.com/klasik2/danlogo.gifhttp://members.rogers.com/eelvish/flyurl.gif
