runway stripes - polygons or textures ?

Recommended Posts

Would anyne here know if white paint on runways is done by emplying polygons or is it done with textures ?The answer interests me a lot since this would show how effective Matrox's new card (Prahelia) would be in eliminating those jaggies.Michael J.

Hi there,As far as I remember it can be done with both approaches! You just need to layer these such that they are drawn on the top of the runway!Check SCASM documentation for further details!Good luck!jmf

Thanks. Good to know. However what really interests me is how in fact Microsoft did it in FS2002 - did they use textures or polygons ?Michael J.

Polygons. The actual concrete or asphalt is the only part that is a texture. The lettering and assorted runway markings are all done with polygons. You can definetly tell with anti-aliasing off.

Hi,I would say "special polygons". In fact, I have a runway that needs special markings as it is the case with the white line edge when a taxiway joins the runway (eg, the white edge needs to be interrupted). I tried poligons and textures. With textures the result is not acceptable even using "non mipmap" textures. With colored polygons the result is better but it does not compare very well with the default lines. The problem appears when you look to the white line with a view direction perpendicular to the line. The line just "shows and vanishes". I do not know why the default lines stay visible even when we look to them at those "difficult" angles. It is as if they were solids (not ground polygons) with a very thin height.Regards, Luis
