Picture of a space warp in 3DS Max for Arno

Featured Replies

Hi Arno it's possable to animate a flag(bit plane) in 3DSMax so it will "wave" in the wind by what's called a "space warp" once your object is created you create a space warp then you "bind" the objectto the warp as in the above photo. Dan

OK, understand the idea now. And you let that wave from one site to the other to animate the flag :). I think you should be able to make something like that in GMax too.Arno

If the world should blow itself up, the last audible voice would be that of an expert saying it can't be done.

Well you could "bend" the bit plane but like I said gmax does not do space warps (the gizmo is in space warp mode in this picture) by using a space warp one gets a fluid wave in the flag that you just can not get by bending the polly so my question is it possable to call a standard "key frame" animation with a macro call and how badwould the frame rate hit be. Macros allways give me a hit so I HATE to use them anymore. Thanks Dan

No sure if it is the same sort of effect, but GMax has a wave modifier. Give about the same visual result to me. The animation would then still be another question of course.I don't know what you mean with call a standard keyframe animation? If you have some data about the animation I am sure you can build it into FS, either using GMax, or by hand coding. And about the frames. Well I wouldn't know. We just need to test. Macro's are not always bad. I have great framerates in scenery with them.Arno

Hi Dan,Just did a test with the wave modifier from GMax. I could make a nice keyframe animation with it in GMax (changing the amplitude so that the plane would wave), but the exporter can't handle this typ of animation, so the result in FS is static. This probably means you will have to edit the code more by hand to get the result.Arno

The standard gMax->MakeMDL won't animate this as if you animate the wave modifier it creates movement at the subobject level (ie vertices) and MakeMDL only outputs animation at the object level. I know next to nothing about hand-coding stuff, but if you could hand-code vertex animation then you could do it by exporting a series of flags at different points in the animation and then flicking between them.Have funFinn

Yes, that's the idea. I used the same idea on a SCASM flag.Arno

Thanks Finn (and Arno too!!) I understand the limitations re:gmax I will try and see if it can be hand coded with some help of a budy of mine who knows his way around dirX as my idea also includes a meltmodifer. There may be a way to do this but the codeing is way over my head (my bud has done work on a low level for rendering engines n the past and he is looking in to it. Thanks Dan
