Is there a method to fix this corrupted island?

Recommended Posts

I HAD plans for making an airfield at this Island called Jan Mayen (ICAO ENJA), to be a part of Norwegian Airports package, which I'm making a few airports for. Unfortunately it seems that Microsoft has placed a bug in the scenery just in the middle of the island, where the airfield should be. The bug is a wide "street" of water running east at N70*56 about halfway the earth around, which also flattens the terrain on it's way. Is there any way to correct this? Also see the screenshot I have provided, with the lat/long on the screen.http://home.online.no/~kjbersas/div/enjabug.jpg

Hi Kjell.Yes, it looks fixable with TMF techniques... here's a preliminary screenshot showing the use of CFS2-style mesh-clinging anti-water ( land ), that allows the default landclass to show.I'll need to trim the shores, and then try to "mesh up" the mountainous area with FS2002 flattens... building points for the mesh to hang on. If successful, the terrain will be as good as new. Might take me a day or two.Dick

Oh! This looks very promising, Dick. I'm really looking forward to see the result of this. Actually I had given up the hope of fixing the bug, but now I'm allready heading for completing this airfield in a day or two :)Some Jan Mayen images and links:http://home.no.net/janmayen/hytter/jan-map.jpgThe airfield is situated near the MET-stationhttp://geo.hmg.inpg.fr/caplain/janmayen/jm_map.jpghttp://home.no.net/janmayen/nyhet/2002-jul/4fly1.jpghttp://home.no.net/janmayen/nyhet/2002-mai/dorn1.jpghttp://home.no.net/janmayen/nyhet/2002-feb/berenb.jpghttp://home.no.net/janmayen/nyhet/2002-jan/fly3.jpghttp://home.no.net/janmayen/

Hi Kjell.Done with the shoreline trimming. Attaching a text file showing the BGLC code. Now I need to 'mesh up' the land area with TMF flattens. This may be a clue as to how Microsoft processes their data for shorelines... some sort of latitudinal bands.CFS2 has no corruption, so I should be able to get some elevations from that... so I think this will work out OK. I've got some mesh derived from GLOBE data, and oversampled at LOD7, so grabbing 1 point per LOD13 area should give me an LOD8 equivalent... I think. *:-*Dick

Ha ha...I'll need 16 points per LOD13 area for LOD7... 1 point is LOD5. I think I'll try the LOD5 first to see how it looks, as that is about the default resolution of the original GLOBE data, and I'm just trying to adjust the error, not oversample.Dick

Hi,I would just like to chip in and say thank you for the work you're doing there Dick - and of course to Kjell and the rest of the people that are creating the Norwegian Airports.I am really enjoying the current version, and I'm really looking forward to what comes next - whenever that may be.Once again - thank you both of you.

Hi Kjell. Bad news. The "meshing-up" of the flattened portion of the island is not going well. I simply get spikes, as the M$'s default flatten code replaces the mesh, probably at an effective rate of LOD13.It may be possible to resample data for the affected portion of the island at LOD13, but I am fearful of how it will look.It may also be possible to find the offending ( original ) HYP*.BGL, and replace it with a corrected version. The file exits in this folder:C:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesFS2002SCENEDBWesthemalaskawSceneryand is named:hyp572124.bglWhy this is in Alaska is beyond me! You can rename the file to hyp572124.bad to deactivate it... but it needs to be replaced. But for now, this is going on a back burner, until I can look at the offending file, and see why it is wrong.Dick

Hi again, Kjell.Good news, now ( I think ).I couldn't leave it alone. I renamed the file to 'hyp572124.bad' , restarted the sim and slewed the world to see the effects of leaving out the BGL.Other than your island... there are no effects at all! I think this is a rogue BGL that should have been deleted. A new TMF trim of the southern coast of the island should fix it... so I'll have it done by the weekend! The mesh will be intact, so I believe you can go ahead with your plans to create the airfield. Slewing with the rogue BGL in place shows a canal encircling the planet. It can be seen clearly at N70* 53.44' , and facing north. Looks strange in Greenland, where the trench is very deep, and odd in Canada, where lakes are meshed above the level of the trench! This was a huge bug to have been found so late. The fix will be to create a new BGL of the same name to replace the defective one M$ left in. I'll post the BGL fix here at AVSIM, and perhaps a few other places. You'll get the credit for the find. ( The replacement BGL will be quite small ).Here's what I have to trim:

Wow that's just great news! I've been experiencing this bug myself while flying in the northernmost parts of Norway - so a fix for this will be greatly appreciated. :)

Hi Frank.Just rename the file to 'hyp572124.bad' and FS2002 should ignore the file, and fix the weird canal at that latitude ( this assumes you have a full install with 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesFS2002SCENEDBWesthemalaskawScenery' on your hard drive, and not cached from the CD ). In fact, the BGL could be deleted. When I replace the BGL, just copy it to the 'alaskawScenery' folder. This seemed pretty sloppy by M$ standards. Not only was it a bug, but the Header Bounds encircled the entire globe ( a terrible framerate and memory waste, and bad coding practice ). If the bounds thing is common, then the sim is bogging down by having unneeded BGLs active and in memory... the island is between Norway and Greenland ( why have it activated in Western Alaska? ).Kjell did us all a great favor by bringing this up. Greenland was ridiculous, and lots of Siberian and Canadian landscape was affected, as well.Dick

Hi Kjell.Ignoring the 'hoopla' surrounding the SDK release, I've managed to replace the bad BGL you discovered. I'll upload it to AVSIM, Flightsim, and Simviation tonight.Thank you, again, for bringing this to the forum, and letting me show a practical application of basic TMF-BGLC coding.Dick
