Textures Rules?

Recommended Posts

Hello,Maybe an easy question about textures.- I am covering my airfield ground with a poly textured with an aerial photography. This phot is 3072x2048 in size. It is cutted in 6 squared parts (1024 each side) and assembled with gmax in one plane polygon divided in 6 segments. The 6 images are used as DXT1 mipmaped files. My problem is the display of kind of blured lighter lines between each division when inside FS2002. Those lines are appearing at a small distance from the plane so I expect them to be linked with the mipmaps. I looked at the images files but everything looks OK.Does someone know what the reason is ?- To avoid those blured lines I tried to display my image in one piece instead of six and then I tried to use a single texture file.My first try was an image in size of 3072x2048 DXT1 mipmaped. It doesn't show probably because It needed to be a multiple of 256.So tried a 4096x2048 DXT1 mipmaped and it works (but is blured). Then I tried the same but without mipmaps and it does not display in FS2002.Then I tried the same with an image size 2048x2048 DXT1 NO mipmap and it works !Who knows what is the rule with textures ???????FLorent

I don't know exactly which textures FS can handle and which not, but I have heard more problems with big textures lately. But back to your first question of the lines. I think you didn't have the mapping of the texture 100% correct. Then it can happen that a small part of the left site of the texture is displayed on the right site. I think that can cause the effect.Arno

If the world should blow itself up, the last audible voice would be that of an expert saying it can't be done.

Hello Arno,Thanks for your answer. How to correct the mapping in that case and how can I check if it is the reason ? Again if I look at the textures files they are correct and when I look at them in Gmax they are correct also.Regarding the rules for using textures in size and formats and mipmaping do you think about an existing source of information ? Maybe a more detailed Imagetool doc ? Are the options in Imagetool such as "border" and "fold" usefull ?

When you zoom in very much it also looks correct in GMax? Then I think it is not a mapping problem :).I think you can best wait if someone else posts his thoughts here. I don't think there are some extra docs or so.Arno
